Apply For A supplementary grant :
Based on parental income:
In addition to the basic grant, you can apply for a supplementary grant at the same time, or later. It is not possible to apply for a supplementary grant retrospectively.

Supplementary grant for everyone?:
Not every student is entitled to a supplementary grant. This part of student finance depends on your parents’ income. We use their income data from 2 years ago.
How much do you get?:
Use the calculator to find out what the income limit is and how much supplementary grant you can get.
What to do?:
Log in to Mijn DUO to apply for a supplementary grant (in Dutch: aanvullende beurs).
** Go to ‘Mijn gegevens’ and choose ‘Persoon’.
** On the ‘Persoon’ screen go to ‘Studiefinanciering’, behind ‘Aangevraagd’.
** On the ‘Details studiefinanciering’ screen go to ‘Wijzig’, behind ‘Studiefinanciering aangevraagd’. The rest is a matter of course.
Gift or loan:
Your supplementary grant is a gift for the first 5 months in higher education (or the first 12 months in secondary vocational education). The rest of it will be converted into a gift if you gain a degree within 10 years.
Extra loan:
If you do not receive the full amount of supplementary grant, you can borrow the shortage as an extra loan. This means each student can get the same amount of money every month.
Parental income decreased:
If your parents’ income has decreased by at least 15%, they can request to have the reference year changed to a more recent year. This may mean that you qualify for a (larger) supplementary grant. If this applies to you, then contact our Customer Service at (050) 599 77 55. We prefer to explain this procedure to you personally.
Problems with your parents:
Sometimes parents cannot or will not cooperate in providing their data. In that case you can request DUO to retrieve their income details, using the form Verzoek inkomen ouders opvragen (Dutch only).
You can also request to leave your parents’ income out of account completely, for example because you have a serious and persistent conflict with (one of) them. If this applies to you, then contact our customer service at (050) 599 77 55. We prefer to explain this procedure to you personally.
Nationality requirements :
If you have the nationality of an EU/EEA-country or Switzerland, you will qualify for student finance if you have been living in the Netherlands for 5 consecutive years or more. Or if you (or your non-Dutch parent or partner) work in the Netherlands for at least 56 hours a month.
If you are not a national of an EU/EEA-country or Switzerland, you can still qualify for student finance if you have a residence permit type II, III or IV. Check the nationality chart below if you have another type of permit.
