Renewing Your Tax Agent Registration :

To continue providing tax agent services for a fee or other reward, you must apply to renew your registration before it expires. If approved your registration will be renewed for a period of at least three years.

Payment of the application fee can be made by BPAY or credit card.

If you lodge your application for renewal before your registration expires, you will remain registered as a tax agent until we notify you of the outcome of your application.

If you do not lodge your application for renewal before your registration expires, your registration will cease and you will no longer be able to legally provide tax agent services for a fee or other reward. We will also notify the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and you will lose access to the ATO Tax Agent Portal.

If your registration has expired and you wish to be registered, you will need to lodge a new application. You will not be able to provide tax agent services for a fee or other reward, until the new application has been decided.

Application fees : The application fees to renew your tax agent registration are:
$500 – if you are carrying on a business as a tax agent
$250 – if you are not carrying on a business as a tax agent.
You must pay your application fee at the time of renewing your registration. Your application cannot be processed until your application fee has been paid in full.
Information on how to pay is provided to you when you are invited to renew and again when you submit your application.

Requirements for renewing your registration :

When you apply to renew your tax agent registration you need to meet the following requirements for registration:
For individual tax agents you must:
i) be a fit and proper person
ii) satisfy the qualifications and relevant experience requirements
iii) meet our continuing professional education requirements
iv) maintain, or will be able to maintain, professional indemnity (PI) insurance that meets our requirements.

For partnership tax agents:
i) each partner who is an individual must be at least 18 years of age
ii) each partner who is an individual must be a fit and proper person
iii) the partnership must maintain, or will be able to maintain, professional indemnity (PI) insurance that meets our requirements
iv) there must be a sufficient number of registered individual tax agents to provide tax agent services to a competent standard and to carry out supervisory arrangements.

In addition to the above requirements, if a company is a partner in the partnership;
i) each director of the company must be a fit and proper person
ii) the company must not be under external administration
iii) the company must not have been convicted of a serious taxation offence or an offence involving fraud or dishonesty during the previous five years.

For company tax agents:
i) each director of the company must be a fit and proper person
ii) the company must maintain, or will be able to maintain, professional indemnity (PI) insurance that meets our requirements
iii) the company must not be under external administration
iv) the company must not have been convicted of a serious taxation offence or offence involving fraud or dishonesty during the previous five years
v) the company must have a sufficient number of registered individual tax agents to provide tax agent services to a competent standard and to carry out supervisory arrangements.

Lodging your application : Once you have obtained all your supporting documents, you can ‘Login’ and apply for renewal of registration as a tax agent and pay the appropriate application fee.

After lodging your application :
We will contact you if additional information is required. We will advise you after the decision is made to either grant or reject your application for renewal of registration.
If your application is rejected, we will advise you of the reasons for our decision and of your appeal rights.
