Changing your name after a marriage or civil partnership :
** The traditional convention of a married woman taking on her husband’s surname means that a marriage certificate alone is normally sufficient proof of a change of name in this particular circumstance.
** However, if you are intending to double-barrel your surnames or ‘enmesh’ them in some way, or for civil partnerships and same-sex marriages it may be advisable to complete a change of name deed to be sure that your name change is recognised universally.
** If you have got divorced, been widowed, or had your civil partnership disolved or annulled and you no longer want to be known by your partners’ surname you have the option to revert to your previous name.
** However, if you choose to change to another name, or an organisation requests proof, you may want to consider a change of name deed as outlined below.
