Apply for Import Permit :

An import permit is required by any individual who would like to apply for permission to import plants or planting material.

Prerequisites :
** The specific commodity or commodities of interest (Scientific name incl. order, sub-order, genus, species, sub-species and variety/cultivar where applicable)

** Common name(s)
** The purpose (e.g. consumption, propagation, research, processing) of importation;

** Country (ies), zone(s),state(s), region(s), province(s), district(s) of origin where applicable
** Pest Risk Analysis (new imports only)

Applicants may also be asked to provide additional information on the goods to be imported. This information may include but is not limited to areas such as;

** distribution records of pests associated with proposed import
** treatment (s) the goods have undergone
** production and processing methods

Steps :
The applicant only needs to complete the Import Permit Application form and deliver it to the Plant Quarantine office at Crumpton Street, Bridgetown.

Applications may be delivered by hand, fax or email. Please ensure that applications submitted electronically have been received by the department to avoid delays in processing. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

Outcome :
Permission to import will be granted based on the information provided on the import permit application.An application for an import permit SHALL only be considered if relevant scientific and other information is provided.

Permits are valid for six (6) months after issue and must be collected from the Plant Quarantine office at Crumpton street. Incomplete import permits will not be processed

Import requirements :
** To import plants or planting material you must apply for permission to do so by completing an application for an import permit
** Applications for an import permit SHALL only be considered if relevant scientific and other information is provided.

The scientific information may be provided by :
** the importer/agent,
** the Competent Authority (National Plant Protection Organization)
** or it may be available to the NPPO (Barbados) through other sources.
** Applicants may also be asked to provide additional information on the goods to be imported.

** This information may include but is not limited to areas such as; distribution records of pests associated with proposed import, treatment (s) the goods have undergone, production and processing methods.

** The plants must be accompanied by an original phytosanitary certificate issued by the country of origin of the import that is dated not more than thirty (30) days before the entry of the plant or planting material

Any planting material imported for the purposes of propagation :
** must be of the smallest propagative unit consistent with good horticultural practices; and
** must be bare rooted or rooted in soil free potting mix

Prohibited packaging material :
** Citrus plants and plant parts
** Cotton plants, plant parts and cotton products
** Forest litter
** Grasses and plant parts
** Leaves and stems of plants in general
** Sugar-cane plants or plant parts
** Soil
** Sand
** Coconut fibre

Plants/Planting material may be confiscated under the following conditions :
** not accompanied by the relevant documents
** arrives infested with a pest organism

the inspector will notify the importer that the consignment :
** will be detained until the relevant documents are received
** will be treated to remove the risk of introduction of a pest
** will be re-exported to the country of origin
** will be destroyed at the importers expense
** The inspector may forego notice and carry out any of the above actions where destruction of the plant or planting materials is urgently required or where giving notice is impractical
