Obligations Of All Citizens/Residents :
Social Security will register and issue free of cost the first Social Security card to every eligible person in Belize.

The obligations of eligible persons are :
** Register themselves and their dependents with Social Security by furnishing accurate and complete information and documentation about themselves and their dependents.
** Reapply for a Social Security card by the expiration date, or if card is lost, damaged/destroyed, defaced or whenever required by Social Security and provide updated personal information as required on the application form.
** Report and present legal, original and valid documents relating to any change in name or immigration status.
** Sign the appropriate forms. If unable to sign his/her name, the person is required to mark an (X) on the space allotted for signature. Click here to download application form (Form R4)
** Keep in safe custody the Social Security cards for themselves and their dependent children under age 14. All Social Security cards shall remain the property of the Social Security Board and will be valid for a period of 10 years or such shorter periods, as authorized by the Social Security Board.
** Do not tamper with any Social Security card or replicate the card that it resembles an original card. The original card must contain un-amended full name, registration number, and such other particulars as stipulated by the Board.
** Carry their social security cards on their person at all times and produce the cards to their prospective employer when applying for a job.
** Make available the Social Security card to any authorized Social Security Officer, Health Care Provider or any other official authorized by Social Security upon request.
** Report immediately to the nearest Social Security Office when their Social Security card, or that of any dependent, is defaced/damaged or expired. The defaced or expired card must also be returned to the Social Security office.
** Report immediately to the nearest Police Station when their valid cards, or that of any dependent, are lost or stolen. Unless if a social security card was destroyed by fire, a report should be made to the fire department and when destroyed by natural disasters such as hurricane, a report should be made to NEMO.
** Do not keep in their possession, social security cards relating to another person, except that of their dependent children under age 14 and other dependent persons in their custody who are unable to act on their own behalf.
** Return to the nearest Social Security Office any lost or stolen cards found.
** Report to Social Security anyone found using a Social Security number and/or Social Security card belonging to someone else.
** Return to the nearest Social Security Office, the Social Security card of any deceased person in their family.
Every eligible person in Belize shall register with the Social Security Board and receive a Social Security card.
Belizean Nationals :
All persons born in Belize are required by law to register with Social Security. Parents of infant children are to register their children within 30 days of birth
Belizeans (born, naturalized or by descent) who have a Social Security number but do not have a valid Social Security card are legally required to present themselves at any of the Social Security Offices to update their registration status including the registration of their eligible dependents and to receive their valid cards.
Belizeans (born, naturalized or by descent) who do not have a Social Security number are required by law to present themselves at any of the Social Security Offices to register themselves and their eligible dependents.
Foreign-Born Persons :
Foreign-born persons residing in Belize with permanent or temporary legal Immigration status such as holders of a Valid Belize Passport, Citizenship by DESCENT, Nationality Certificate, Valid Permanent Residence (PR) Card or Stamp, CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) Certificate or Stamp, Refugee Card or Letter, Condition Stamp, Special Permit, Temporary Work Permit and Stamp, Dependent Permit and Stamp or Student (Pass) Permit and Stamp are legally required to register themselves and their dependents.
Dependents of Foreign-Born Persons :
Dependents (children and Spouse) of Foreign-born persons will register if they are legally authorized by the Immigration Authorities to stay in the country with the Permit holder who has permanent or temporary legal immigration status. Foreign-born Persons are entitled to benefits under the Scheme according to their classification. Holders of Dependent Permits qualify for a Social Security card, not exceeding the validity of the cardholder’s permit bearing legend “Not Valid for Employment.”
Last NAme With Multiple Parts :
The applicant’s last name(s) will correspond with the name(s) shown on the document used to establish identity. An applicant whose name has legally changed after birth must submit an identify document showing the legal name.
For example, married woman can use her maiden name, or her maiden name followed by her husband’s surname, or her maiden name followed by a “de” or a hyphen (-) and her husband surname provided that she submits her marriage certificate.
Foreign-Born Persons Without Legal Immigration Status :
Foreign-born persons without legal immigration status do not qualify for a Social Security card, except for those who have contributed to the Social Security Scheme prior to the year 2000 and are entitled to or are receiving a Long-term or Disablement pension under the Social Security Act.
The card issued to these pensioners must bear the legend “Not Valid for Employment”
These persons must present either of the following original documents from their country of origin :
** Valid Passport; or
** Cedula/Documento Personal de Identificacion (DPI); or
** Birth Certificate accompanied by a photo identification card (ID).
