1. Young Scot National Entitlement Card :

If you already have a Young Scot National Entitlement Card you’ll get a bus concession card, discounted rail travel and, if you live on an island, ferry vouchers – all when you turn 16.

The Young Scot National Entitlement Card gives travel discounts to 16-18 year olds, or full time volunteers under 26.

Your travel cards will be automatically sent to you when you turn 16. If you don’t have a Young Scot National Entitlement Card yet, visit the Young Scot site for application details.

2. Rail Travel :

Please be aware that from 1 April 2014, there are changes to the process that allows young people to access concessionary rail travel.

The Young Scot National Entitlement Card alone will now allow 16-18 year olds access to discounted rates on rail travel.

Presenting the card will give you :
** One third off most rail fares
** 50% off all weekly or monthly tickets
** One third off most advance purchases

This new process removes the need for a Scottish Youth Rail Card. You will receive the discount by simply presenting your Young Scot NEC when purchasing a rail ticket at stations, or on board trains where no ticket issuing facilities are available.

Please note only those young people with a Young Scot branded card will have access to the discounted product.

3. Bus Concession Card :

Young people aged 16 to 18 with Young Scot National Entitlement Cards and Young Persons Bus Cards can receive one third off adult single fares on almost all local and long-distance buses in Scotland.

In addition, these can be used on most services to and from Carlisle and on most services to and from Berwick-upon-Tweed from anywhere in Scotland. To get your discount book in advance in person or just jump on the bus.

The Young Scot National Entitlement card can now also be used to gain a discount on most bus operators in Scotland removing the need to carry a separate bus concession card. You will receive your discount by simply placing your Young Scot NEC on the bus Electronic Ticketing Machine and stating your destination to the driver. Your discount will now automatically be calculated.

Please note not all bus operators in Scotland are able to accept this.

Operators currently not able to accept the Young Scot NEC include :
** First Glasgow
** Lothian
** NX Dundee
** Stagecoach
** Citylink
** Glenvalley Tours
** Silverdale Coaches
** Waverley Travel
** Wilsons of Rhu

To receive your discount on these buses please continue to show the green and yellow Young Persons Bus Card to the bus driver when stating your destination. Transport Scotland will continue to work with bus operators to move to a smart ticketing basis. In the interim we would advise carrying both the Young Scot NEC and Young Persons Bus Card to ensure you receive your discounted fare.

4. Ferry vouchers :

Scottish islanders can get two free return ferry journeys to the mainland a year. The vouchers are valid from 1 April to 31 March and are issued automatically every year until you turn 19 (or 26 if you’re a full time volunteer).

Take more than one ferry to reach the mainland- Let your local authority know and they’ll send vouchers for that part of the journey too.
