What is Icelandic Citizenship?
A certificate from the Directorate of Education demonstrating that you have passed an Icelandic language test for applicants for Icelandic citizenship or documents to exempt them from such a test, see further in conditions. Applications cannot be completed unless a copy of all requested documents is included as an attachment in pdf format. Note that some supporting documents must also be submitted to the Directorate of Immigration in paper format. They can be sent by regular mail to the Directorate of Immigration or delivered to the drop box in the Directorate’s lobby in Dalvegur 18 in Kópavogur.

Applying after shorter residence:
You can apply for Icelandic citizenship after a shorter residence period if:
**You are married to an Icelandic citizen and have been domiciled in Iceland for the past 4 years since marriage. Your marital spouse must have been an Icelandic citizen for a minimum of 5 years.
**You cohabit with an Icelandic citizen and have had legal residence in Iceland for the past 5 years since the registration of the cohabitation. Your cohabiting spouse must have been an Icelandic citizen for a minimum of 5 years.
**You are the child of an Icelandic citizen and have been domiciled in Iceland for the past 2 years. Your parent must have been an Icelandic citizen for a minimum of 5 years.
**You are a Nordic citizen and have been domiciled in Iceland for the past 4 years.
**You are a refugee or have a residence permit for humanitarian reasons and have been domiciled in Iceland for the past 5 years after being granted refugee status or a humanitarian permit.
**You are a stateless person under the provisions of the law on foreigners and have been domiciled in Iceland for the past 5 years.
**You are a former Icelandic citizen and have been domiciled in Iceland for the past year. You lost your Icelandic citizenship because of an application and granting of a foreign citizenship.
Continuous Residence:
To maintain a continuous residence you must not have stayed abroad for longer than 90 days in total in each 12-month period.
If you stay abroad for longer than 90 consecutive days in a 12-month period, that stay does not count towards the qualifying residence period that applies to you.
Exemptions from continuous residence:
An exemption from the condition on continuous residence during the qualifying period may be granted if you have stayed abroad:
**For a total of up to one year during the qualifying period.
**For a total of up to two years, due to temporary employment or circumstances beyond your control, for example, your illness or that of a close relative.
**For a total of up to three years for studying purposes.
** Because of the employment of a spouse or a custodian parent, who is an Icelandic citizen and works abroad representing Iceland or is an employee of an international organization of which Iceland is a member.
Residence Permit for Icelandic Citizenship
Applicants must have been issued a permanent residence permit or be exempt from the obligation to hold a residence permit under the Foreign Nationals Act.
Exempt from the obligation to hold a residence permit according to current legislation are Nordic citizens and citizens of EEA/EFTA states.
Individuals who acquired the right to reside without a residence permit based on older legislation retain this right.
Personal identification for Icelandic Citizenship
**Applicants must prove their identity in a satisfactory manner by submitting a copy of their passport.
**Copies of certain identity cards may replace copies of passports.
Icelandic Skills
Applicants must have passed an Icelandic language test in accordance with requirements set out in the regulation on Icelandic examinations for applicants for Icelandic citizenship.
The Directorate of Education prepares and reviews the tests, while Mímir conducts the tests.

Exemptions from the Icelandic language test
The Directorate of Immigration may grant an exemption from the language test requirement if it is considered unfair to make this a condition. This may apply for example for:
**Applicants 65 years of age or older that have been domiciled in Iceland for seven years preceding the submission of the application.
**Applicants that can confirm with a medical certificate that they are not able to undergo a langugae test for serious physical or mental reasons.
**Applicants that attend primary school in Iceland or are younger than the primary school age.
**Applicants that can confirm with an appropriate certificate from an Icelandic school that their language competence equals the legal requirements set out in Article 4 of the regulation.
Tax Payments & Arrears of Icelandic Citizenship
Applicants will not be granted Icelandic citizenship if any of the following applies to them:
**Unsuccessful attachment has been made in the applicant’s property in the past three years.
**The applicant’s estate has been accepted for liquidation.
**The applicant is in arrears with the payments of taxes.
The Directorate of Immigration is authorized to obtain information from CretidInfo in conformation of this, see further in the Data Protection Terms.
Ability to financially support oneself
Applicants must demonstrate that they:
**Have sufficient funds, income or other financial means, to support themselves in Iceland.
**Have not received financial assistance from a municipality in the past three years.
**Have supported themselves legally in Iceland for the past three years.
Amount Of Funds for Icelandic Citizenship
The minimum amount of funds required per month is:
** 212.694 ISK for individuals.
** 340.320 ISK for married couples.
The amount corresponds to the basic amount of financial assistance from the City of Reykjavík, see further rules on financial assistance (in Icelandic).
Exemptions from financial self-sufficiency
** Children under the age of 18, dependent on a parent or guardian residing in Iceland, are exempt from the requirement.
** Students aged 18 to 20, who live with a parent or guardian, must only demonstrate 50% of the reference amount for individuals: 106.346 ISK per month.
** A marital spouse. Due to the maintenance obligation between married couples, it is sufficient that one spouse demonstrates sufficient funds for both.
** Note that the exemption does not apply to cohabiting spouses.
** Relatives (parents, grandparents, great-grandparents) 67 years or older, dependent on their child/children in Iceland, do not need to show independent funds.
How to demonstrate sufficient funds
Applicants can use any of the means listed below to demonstrate sufficient funds and different means can also be combined, for example income and/or bank balance.
Employment contract or self-employment income
**Applicants can submit original employment contracts or demonstrate earned income by submitting a pay-as-you-earn tax statement (withholding tax) or issued invoices, stamped by the tax authorities.
**If an applicant is financially dependent on another individual, the equivalent documents of that individual can be submitted.
Payslips for Icelandic Citizenship
**Applicants can submit last three months’ payslips. Printouts from an online bank are satisfactory, otherwise employer confirmation is required.
**The pay-as-you-earn tax must have been paid on the wages and the Directorate of Immigration examines the tax register in confirmation.
**If an applicant is financially dependent on another individual, the payslips of that individual can be submitted.
Guaranteed Regular Payments of Icelandic Citizenship
Applicants can submit confirmation of regular payments for instance payments from the Social Insurance Administration in respect of invalidity, unemployment benefits, rental income and grants received by the applicant, e.g. for research.
Disposable Funds for Icelandic Citizenship
**Applicants can submit bank statements showing their account balance, in Iceland or abroad.
**The amount must be in an internationally acknowledged currency that can be changed into a currency registerd witht the Central Bank of Iceland and be withdrawn to use for support.
**The statement must be confirmed by the bank itself and in its original.
**A printout from an online bank is not sufficient confirmation.
**If an applicant is financially dependent on another individual a bank statement of that individual cam be submitted.
