Passports & Travel Documents :
Tanzania government issues various types of passports and travel documents as provided by the Tanzania Passports and Travel documents Act of 2002 and its Regulations of 2004.
Service passport my be issued to any citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania who is in the public service.
The competent authority to authorize the grant of passports is the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services. Currently passports are printed at the Immigration Headquarters, Dar es Salaam and at the Zanzibar Immigration Head Office.
Types of Passports and Travel Documents :
Ordinary Passport :
An ordinary passport may be issued to any citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania for the purpose of travelling outside the United Republic of Tanzania
Diplomatic Passport :
A Diplomatic passport may be issued to a citizen of the United Republic who is entitled to such passport as specified by the Tanzania Passports and Travel documents Act of 2002.
East African Passport :
East African passport may be issued to citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania who intends to travel within the East African Community Partner States.
Emergency Travel Document :
Emergency travel documents may be issued to a citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania who is travelling on an emergency journey and does not fulfill the normal requirements of getting a passport. Also to a person who is stranded abroad and cannot get a passport or being deported back home.
Certificate of Identity :
This document may be issued to a person other than a citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania who cannot obtain a passport from the country of which he is the citizen or does not have citizenship of any country for the purpose of travelling outside the United Republic of Tanzania.
Geneva Convention Travel Document :
This document may be issued to any refugee granted asylum in the United Republic of Tanzania.
Requirements for application of Passport :
An application for a passport shall be accompanied by :
** A Birth Certificate or Birth affidavit or Certificate of Naturalization of the applicant (In case the applicant is a citizen by naturalization).
** A birth certificate or birth affidavit or Certificate of Naturalization of the applicant’s parent or parents.
** Recent, clear and un-mounted passport size photographs as may be directed by the issuing authority.
** In case of the applicant who is below the age of 18 years, the parent’s or legal guardian’s written consent.
Note :
An affidavit regarding the birth of the applicant shall be stated or sworn by :
** a parent or legal guardian; or
** a person who was present at the place of birth when the applicant was born and who is not less than five years above the age of the applicant; or
** the applicant’s close relative who was informed of the applicant’s birth by the parents.
** In some cases the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services may require the applicant of a passport to produce evidence of citizenship of his parent.

Supporting Documents For Specified Trips :
Apart from the requirements provided above, the applicant for a passport shall be required to submit the following documents depending on the nature of the intended trip :
1. Private Trip :
The application for private trip shall be accompanied by :-
** proof of applicant’s activities;
** invitation letter;
** return ticket;
** permission letter from the parent or guardian to the applicant below the age of 18 years;
** permission letter from the employer if the applicant is employed;
** letter from the Ward Executive Officer/Sheha, where the applicant resides.
2. Employment Trip :
The application for employment trip shall be accompanied by :-
** offer of employment;
** return ticket and
** letter from Ward Executive Officer/Sheha where the applicant resides.
3. Study Trip :
The application for the study trip shall be accompanied by :-
** admission letter;
** academic certificates;
** sponsorship letter;
** proof of payment for private sponsorship;
** permission letter from the employer if the applicant is employed and
** permission letter from the parent or guardian to the applicant below the age of 18 years.
4. Religious Trip :
The application for religious trip shall be accompanied by :
invitation letter and a letter from a designated registered religious organization responsible for the trip.
5. Medical Treatment Trip :
The application for medical treatment trip shall be accompanied by:
** a letter from the Principal Medical Officer; or
** proof from a registered Medical practitioner and
** a letter of authority from the Ministry of Health.
6. Sports Trip :
The application for sports trip shall be accompanied by :
** a letter from the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) or the Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA) or
** a letter from a registered Sports Association.
** invitation letter.
7. Scouts Trip :
The application for scouts trip shall be accompanied by :
** a letter from the relevant Scouts Association;
** permission letter from the parent or guardian to the applicant below the age of 18 and
** invitation letter.
8. Official Trip :
The application for official trip shall be accompanied by :
** a letter from the employer;
** invitation letter and
** identity card of the applicant.
9. Business Trip :
The application for business trip shall be accompanied by :
** a valid business license and
** return ticket.
10. Seaman Trip :
The application for seaman trip shall be accompanied by :
** contract of employment;
** seaman discharge book;
** academic certificates and
** letter from the relevant Seaman Union.
Requirements For Application Of Travel Documents :
** Emergency Travel Document
** The application for an Emergency Travel Document shall be accompanied by :
** four passport size photographs
** Certificate of Identity
** The application for a Certificate of Identity shall be accompanied by :
** police loss report where there is no Embassy office and
** two passport size photographs
** Geneva Convention Travel Document
** The application for Geneva Convention Travel Document shall be accompanied by :
** a letter from the Director of Refugees Department;
** a copy of Refugee Identity Card and
** two passport size photographs
Application For Replacement Of Passports And Travel Documents :
Where a passport is full or damaged in such a way that it requires to be replaced, the holder of such passport may apply for a new passport to the Principal Commissioner of Immigration services in the prescribed manner.
Documents to support application for replacement of a Passport and Travel Document
The application for replacement of a passport shall be accompanied by :
** the previous passport and
** four Passport size photographs
** The application for replacement of a Travel Document shall be accompanied by :
** the previous Travel Document and
** two passport size photographs.
Application For Replacement Of A Lost Or Stolen Passport :
Where a passport is is lost, stolen or severely damaged, an application for replacement shall be accompanied by sworn declaration of the circumstances surrounding the loss, theft or damage of the passport and authority to which the loss, theft or damage was reported.
Note :
In case of a lost or stolen Passport the holder of such passport is required to:
** report the loss or theft at the nearest police station;
** publish the loss or theft in a daily news paper issued at a place where the incident occurred.
Revocation Of A Passport And Travel Document :
** The Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services at any time may revoke the passport or travel document granted or issued to the holder where :-
** The holder of a passport permits another person to use his/her passport.
** The holder of a passport has been deported or repatriated to the United Republic of Tanzania at the expense of the Government.
** The holder has ceased to be a citizen of United Republic of Tanzania.
** The holder engages in illicit drug trafficking, money laundering, migrant trafficking, terrorism acts or any other illegal transaction.
** It is in the national interests or national security.
