National Library Services to Schools Transformation Programme :
The National Library is transforming its Services to Schools in response to library and education directions. We have developed a new vision statement which is for “all young people to have access to effective and connected library services and library learning environments that support their development as readers and digitally literate learners”.
Services to Schools will continue to support teachers and schools through the provision of print and online resources, and the development of school libraries. We will be moving to achieve our vision by implementing services with an increased emphasis on the priority areas of reading engagement, digital literacy and modern library learning environments.
Why is Services to Schools changing?:
Services to Schools is changing to become a more efficient, strategic and relevant service. The changes are designed to leverage areas of unique National Library expertise and value; to reflect the research base of factors proven to have the highest impact on student learning in the priority areas of reading engagement, digital literacy and modern library learning environments; and to take advantage of current education sector opportunities. The changes will also ensure National Library service sustainability.
When is Services to Schools changing?:
We will be developing, implementing and communicating new services over a four year period. In 2015 we will begin our transition to new services and from Term 3 the print lending service will change. A new reading engagement service will be introduced, replacing the current print curriculum topic service. Enhanced online curriculum support will be available.
The reading engagement lending service commences from Term 3, 2015. What’s happening to the loan service in Terms 1 and 2?:
Individual teachers and librarians will be able to get a curriculum topic loan as usual for Terms 1 and 2 in 2015. To access this you will need to put in your request at any time before 13 March, 2015. You need to put in one request to cover both terms, and you will receive the usual 30 books maximum. You can make your request via the Services to Schools online form or by phoning a reference librarian.
Can individual teachers and librarians get a walk-in loan for Terms 1 and 2 in 2015?:
Yes. You can get a walk-in loan from any Services to Schools centre before 13 March 2015.
Will individual teachers and librarians still be able to order books from Term 3, 2015?:
From Term 3, 2015 the lending service will be reading engagement-focused. A nominated individual from each school will need to request a reading engagement loan, which is provided to a whole school for everyone’s use. Loans to individual teachers and librarians will no longer be available. We will provide your school with support and advice for managing whole-school loans early in 2015.
What is a reading engagement loan?:
Services to Schools has a large specialised collection of children and young adult literature. This collection provides the basis for print loans designed explicitly to support the development of reading for pleasure in young people.
Loans are comprised of quality fiction and high interest non-fiction books from New Zealand and the world. The specific selection of books is tailored, reflecting the profile of the individual school receiving the loan.
Schools receive one loan annually, but can access it at any time throughout the year. The loans will be supported by professional online material designed to help schools to foster a reading culture within their communities.
Will curriculum topic support still be available after Term 3, 2015?:
Curriculum support via print loans of books on requested topics will no longer be available.
Quality content to support the curriculum will be available on the Services to Schools website. This content includes National Library resources (including digitised heritage items); Epic and ManyAnswers; Curriculum topics (sets of curated resources, organised according to the New Zealand Curriculum and on topics for which there is demonstrated demand); and tools and guides for the effective use of digital content.
From Term 3, 2015, how do schools request a reading engagement loan?:
A nominated individual from each school will need to request the reading engagement loan. We will provide details and support for doing this in 2015.
