To request an item through Interlibrary Loan, you must first go through a one-time online registration process in order to identify your institution to the Library of Congress.
Start Registration : http://www.loc.gov/rr/loan/LendingFirstTime.html
Registration has three purposes:
** You will only have to supply contact information to the Library once.
** Having email and postal mail addresses on file with the Library enables us to notify you promptly and deliver materials accurately when your request is processed and fullfilled.
** Your unique Username and Password allows your institution secure access to information about your requests, including information about past requests.
About Usernames and Passwords:
After registering online, perhaps with a delay as CALM Division staff research your library’s status, you will be sent a Username and Password via email. Please use this information when making all future ILL requests from the Library of Congress.
Username:
Your Username will most likely be based on the OCLC symbol for your library (please supply that information when registering online). CALM Division staff will verify the symbol against OCLC’s Policy Directory, as well as your library’s name and address against other authentication sources. If necessary, they will contact you by phone to verify any information in question. If you do not receive an email notification from the ILL Coordinator (email name: Library of Congress Interlibrary Loan), it means your registration information has not been authenticated.
Password:
A Password will also be assigned for use with your Username. It will not be a dictionary word, so please save a copy of it in a secure place for future use. You will not be allowed to change your password. However, If you misplace your password, you may re-register. The ILL system will encrypt your password, so that it remains secure.
Important Copyright Information:
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.
Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research”. If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use”, that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
The Library of Congress reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Notice of Service Interruption:
Please be informed that we are currently in the process of upgrading our ILLiad database system. Unfortunately, we have encountered problems, such that some interlibrary loan requests cannot be opened for updating. We are working with Atlas Systems on a remedy for this problem, but cannot yet determine when it will be fixed.
We apologize for any inconvenience the service interruption may cause. If you have any questions, please contact Candice Townsend, email: ctow@loc.gov.
