What is Bahamas Financial Assistance?
The Financial Assistance Programme provides assistance to families with the following services: Utilities (water and electricity), Uniform and Footwear (for school- aged children), and household items (gas tank and cooking gas, bed, refrigerator and stove). Assistance may be given to families whose utilities (water and electricity) have been disconnected or are facing disconnection. Assistance for household items are granted once in a twelve month period.

Criteria For Bahamas Financial Assistance
** The applicant must be earning minimum wage or lower.
** Be a Bahamian citizen or Bahamian Permanent Resident
** Be over the age of 18
** Be the Head of the Household
** Submit Pay Slip, Job letter or Termination letter
** Submit a Valid Passport of Head of Household and all householdmembers
** Submit a Valid NIB smart card of Head of Household and all household members
** Birth certificate/Affidavit of child or children under the age of eighteen (18), and Proof of Guardianship (if applicable)
** May need a Marriage Certificate, Divorce decree or legal separation documents to verify status
** Doctor’s letter, if unable to work due to ill health
Utilities:
If you are seeking assistance with utilities (water and electricity) you will require the documents above and the following:
** Recent Utility Bill or Statement up to six (6) prior to the date of application
Household Items:
If you are seeking assistance to replace household items, such as beds, refrigerator and stove which may have been damaged by fire or a natural disaster, or if you need to purchase a cooking gas tank or obtain a gas tank refill, you will need the documents above and the following:
** Three price quotes for each item requested from companies that are
** registered as vendors with Treasury Department.
Note:
This household assistance is granted once in a twelve (12) month period.

What is a Household?
A household may be one person living alone, a family, or several, unrelated individuals who live together and routinely purchase and prepare meals together. Certain family members or individuals who live together and do not routinely purchase and prepare meals together do not have to be included in the household.
The following are considered as household members:
** those who spent at least one week in the house in the past 4 weeks,
** those who in the past 12 months stayed 3 or more months in the house,
** live-in caregiver,
** students staying away from home,
** members who have been living in the household 6 months or more,
** members who have been living in the household less than 6 months under the following categories only: household head, infants less than 6 months old, members who just joined the household because of marriage, members who just joined as live-in servants, or a new household.
The following are not considered as household members:
** deceased individuals,
** lodgers
** guests or visitors
The decision of whether or not an individual must be included in the household is based on the Department of Social Service policies.
Who would be the Head of Household?
The designation head of household, also termed head of family, is applied to one whose authority to exercise family control and to support the dependent members is founded upon a moral or legal obligation or duty.
