Employers, here is how to submit your Earnings Online

The National Insurance Office has just added a new feature to the Barbados Social Security Internet Service.

Employers can now submit an electronic earnings file generated from the payroll package.

The new facility also allows employers to access a pre-filled as well as a blank earnings schedule and submit them.

Please note however that after September 1, 2007, earnings will not be accepted via e-mail.

If you are interested in signing up for the Service, please visit our download the form. The form must be completed and you must bring your picture identification to our Office on Culloden road with an active e-mail address. This is necessary for security purposes.

Pension Reform :
** “You can now retire at any age between 60 and 70”
** Since January 1, 2003, several important changes were made to our pension system to ensure that future generations receive an adequate pension. See the changes below.

Increase in pensionable age :
** As a result of Pension Reform, the penionable age will increase by 6 months every four years from January 1, 2006 until it reaches 67 on January 1, 2018.

Flexible retirement :
** Other changes which came about from Pension Reform include the introduction of flexible retirement/pensionable ages. This means that eventually you will be able to retire at any age between 60 and 70. You can receive early pension from age 60.

Non-contributory Old Age Pension :
How do I qualify for non-contributory old age pension?
1. You must be either a Barbadian citizen or permanent resident.
Barbadian citizens must have been residing in Barbados for a period of :
** Twelve years since turning 40 years old
** Or an aggregate of 20 years since turning 18

Permanent residents must have been residing in Barbados for a period of :
** Fifteen years since turning 40 years old.
** or an aggregate of 20 years since turning 18

2. You must have reached pensionable age. For the blind and deaf-mute the pensionable age is 18.

I receive a pension from the Barbados public service, can I still receive the Non-Contributory Old Pension?
You are not entitled to a pension if you :
1. receive a pension from the Barbados Public Service
2. the public service of another government or from an international organization of which the Barbados Government is a member, like the United Nations
3. receive one from the NIS that is higher than the non-contributory old age pension

4. receive a pension provided by a National Insurance and Social Security Scheme of another Government
5. receive an income of more than $30 a week and are blind or deaf-mute and under pensionable age

6. are continuously absent from Barbados for more than six months
7. are a full-time in-patient at a health service institution maintained by the Government, like a hospital or home
8. are imprisoned.
