Your new license will be mailed to the residence address on file with the DMV, and you will have an opportunity to verify this address before completing your renewal.

If an address change is necessary, you will need to visit the DMV Web site to download the ‘Change of Address’ form and mail it to the Cranston DMV before completing your renewal. Please allow enough time for the change to be processed before trying again to renew your license online.
Upon completion of your online application for renewal, you will be able to print a receipt or have it e-mailed to you. This receipt, in conjunction with your current physical license, will be accepted for state and local law enforcement purposes. If you do not have a printer or e-mail address, you may renew your license, but no receipt will be available indicating your renewal.
You will not be able to submit any changes to your license information via this online service, including name, residence and mailing addresses, physical characteristics (height, weight, eye color, hair color), restrictions, endorsements and veteran status.
Due to Federal regulations, Commercial Driver Licenses (CDL) can not be renewed online and can only be renewed in person at the Cranston DMV. Also, licenses which are suspended, revoked, expired for more than 180 days, or do not meet certain state or national requirements may not be renewed online.
Your license renewal request will be processed within three business days. You will receive your new license in up to 60 days. Your receipt, in conjunction with your current physical license, will be accepted for local and state law enforcement purposes. Completion of your renewal well in advance of the expiration date is highly recommended.
Because access to some renewal eligibility information is limited, this online service may be unavailable at the following times:

Q. How do I get a copy of my driving record?
A. Driving records are processed through the Operator Control division. A driving record includes any special license classifications (CDL), restrictions, and a list of any tickets, accidents and/or suspensions you may have incurred in the last 3 years.

Q. Do I need insurance?
A. All cars driven in the state of RI must be insured. The insurance company must be licensed to do business in the state of RI. When the DMV asks for your ‘insurance information’on a form, what you need to provide is the name of your insurance company, the policy number, and the effective dates of the policy. The policy must be in the name(s) in which the vehicle is being registered.
Q. I renewed my license at a DMV branch, and have not yet received it in the mail. What should I do?
A. Your temporary license is valid for 90 days. If your license does not arrive in this period of time, you should contact the DMV at (401) 462-4368 for assistance.

Q. What forms of payment do you accept?
A. Acceptable forms of payment are: cash, money orders, personal checks, bank checks, and credit card (VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express). All credit cards have a minimum fee of $1.50 per transaction. Transactions of $64.00 and over have a service fee of 2.35%. This fee goes to the third party provider, Forte Payment Systems.
