Basic Requirements :
There is no age requirement. Any person old enough to sign their name, or make a mark indicating their legal signature can apply.

Documents Required:
** Documentation showing your identity, residential address, full social security number, and U.S. citizenship or proof of lawful presence in the United States. Click here for more information.
** If the applicant previously was issued a driver’s license/permit/ID card in another state, and that card has been lost or stolen, the applicant must provide a certified copy of his or her driving record or motor vehicle report from the state that issued the card. The MVR must be dated within the last 30 days. The DDS does not accept uncertified copies printed from websites, but a fax may be sent to the DDS directly from the other state agency.
** All documents must be in English.
Notes:
** All Georgia licensed drivers are eligible for a Georgia ID card.
** Applicants that hold a valid driver’s license/permit/ID card from another state are not eligible for a Georgia ID card unless they surrender the out-of-state driver’s license/permit/ID card.
** Applicants can apply for an ID card if a Georgia or out-of-state driver’s license is valid, suspended/revoked, cancelled, or expired.
** Applicants that hold a valid driver’s license from another country are eligible for a Georgia ID card and are not required to surrender their out-of-country driver’s license.
** Applicants under age 18 are required to have a parent/guardian or responsible adult to sign the application for the Identification Card. Responsible adult only applies to emancipated applicants with court ordered documentation.
Fees and Terms:
The fee schedule and Terms issued are shown below. Fees do not reflect a $5.00 discount received for renewing your driver’s license or ID card using Online Services, (free documents are excluded). Short term driver’s licenses are for 5 years and long term driver’s licenses are for 8 years.
DDS Customer Service Centers accept Credit/Debit Cards including Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express. We also accept Cash, Money Order and Checks.
DDS Online Services accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express and debit cards issued with a MasterCard or Visa logo for payment of fees.
Note 1: Non-Citizens, Short Term fee of $20 applies.
** If there is an expiration date on the Immigration documents then the driver’s license expiration date will match the expiration of the Immigration documentations, but not to be issued for more than 5 years.
** If there is no expiration date on the Immigration documents and the customer is a Lawful Permanent Resident, Asylee, Refugee then the driver’s license will be issued for 5 years.
** If there is no expiration date on the Immigration documents and the customer is not a Lawful Permanent Resident, Asylee, Refugee then the driver’s license will be issued for a maximum of 1 year.
Note 2: Permit Fee Requirements
The $10 permit fee must be paid before the test begins. If any part of the test is failed, no refund will be issued and the permit fee must be paid again prior to every testing attempt.
Note 3: Permit Terms
** Term for CP Permit is 2 years.
** Term for EP and FP Permits is 1 year.
** Terms for MP Permit is 6 months
Note 4: CDL Application Fee
Applies to both CDL License Class A & B and CDL Instructional Permit AP & BP.
Note 5: Restricted CDL, Class B
** Driver’s license is valid for 5 years but limited to the seasonal period.
** The Farm Services Related Industries Waiver card will be issued for a continuous 180-day period and applicants are permitted to obtain one waiver card in any twelve (12) month period.
Note 6: CDL Endorsement Term
** Endorsements without Hazmat are valid for the term of the CDL license and are automatically renewed with the CDL License without any additional fees.
** Endorsements with Hazmat are valid for 5 years from the Threat Assessment date and applicants must pass Hazmat knowledge test and TSA Background checks to be renewed.
Note 7: CDL Endorsement Fee
** If Hazmat endorsements are added during the initial issuance then no fee applies.
** All endorsements with or without Hazmat added after issuance will be charged a $5 fee one time only for each endorsement.
Note 8: Address Changes
If you have already received a free address change since your last renewal, charges may be associated with your address change request, and renewal may be required.
Note 9: Replacement
If a replacement driver’s license/permit/ID card is requested within 150 days of the original date, it will be processed as a Renewal and new term and fees apply.
