The BITE Card is Essex County Council’s proof of age card for young people aged 11 and above. You can obtain a card by completing an application form from your school or library. Details of how to apply are listed below.

Benefits:
** helps prove your age to the bus driver so you can have the reduced fare you are entitled to under the bus company’s terms and conditions
** if you are older but look young, it will help prove your age when buying age-restricted goods
** doubles as a library card.

How to apply:
The easiest way is to apply through your school. Alternatively, you may obtain an application form from your library or contact us. You will need a colour passport quality photograph and an authorised person that can verify your age and application and sign. Full guidance is available with the form. You will receive your card in 2-4 weeks.

If you go to school in Essex or live in Essex but attend school outside the county, you are entitled to one free card in each age band: 11-13, 14-15 and 16+.

Lost or stolen:
Stolen cards are replaced free of charge when a Police Incident Number is supplied. You do not have to supply new photographs. If your card was also previously used as a library card, you must tell your local library immediately to prevent fraudulent use. If you need a replacement card, live outside of the administrative area of Essex County Council or are over the age of 18 there is a £5 charge.

Buses:
If your bus driver refuses to accept your card, please contact us.

Retailers:
As your card has the PASS hologram it should be accepted by major retailers but this cannot be guaranteed. The retailers in these areas use different proof of age cards so may not recognise it. Please call Consumer Direct on 0845 4040506 if you encounter a problem.

Southend and Thurrock:
Your BITE Card can be used as a library card in Southend and Thurrock. If you are using your BITE card on a bus which travels across Essex into Southend and Thurrock they should recognise your card. However, bus services operating only in Southend and Thurrock may not.

Bus fares consultation :
Essex Saver ticket :
** Following discussions with the commercial bus service providers, the decision was taken to increase the Essex Saver ticket price in order to prevent it from breaking the Competition and Market Authority rules on multi-operator ticketing.

** From 16 July 2017, the price will be £9 per person. The price will increase on 1 April 2018 to £10 and then reviewed annually thereafter in line with RPI.
** You can see full information about where the Essex Saver ticket is accepted on our bus ticket page.

Area-based Evening/Sunday Saver tickets :
** Following discussions with commercial bus service providers, the decision was taken to remove three tickets that are out of line with the bus fares in Essex.

These tickets are :
** Chelmsford – Evening Saver and Sunday Saver
** Colchester – Evening Saver and Sunday Saver
** Harlow – Evening Saver

** The above tickets are not to be confused with the Essex Sunday Saver, which remains available at great value for £4 per adult, £2 per child and £8 per family.
** The Area-based saver tickets listed above will be withdrawn on 15 July 2017.
** Please note the consultation on bus fares is now closed.

** Essex County Council has consulted with Essex residents about raising bus fares on specific routes over a 3 year period, to understand the impact this would have on passengers. Please note – this was not a consultation on bus services across Essex with a view to reducing service provision.

** The proposal was that fares would rise by approximately 5% (rounded up to the nearest 10 pence) year-on-year for three years. For instance, a £2 fare will increase to £2.10 in September 2016, £2.20 in April 2017 and £2.30 in April 2018. Please note – this will not affect those using the English National Concessionary Bus Pass.
