Applying For Passport Online :
A passport is the primary travel document used by Finnish citizens. A passport also doubles as proof of identity.

Please note the following important points about passports:
** You can only travel with your own, valid passport. This also applies to children. In addition, a broken or damaged passport will not get you through border control.
** Always check with the authorities of your travel destination or the relevant travel regulations to find out what kind of passport you need and whether any other restrictions apply, such as requirements relating to passport expiry dates.
** The name and personal identity code on your passport must be up to date at all times. You must apply for a new passport if you change your name as a result of getting married, for example. If your personal details have changed, check with your local register office to ensure that your record in the Population Information System has been updated. The Police take the personal details for your passport from the Population Information System.
** In general, you can only have one valid passport in your possession at a time. Your old passport will expire as soon as you have applied for and been issued with a new passport, even if there is still time left on your old passport.
A normal passport is usually valid for five years.
Applying for a passport online:
Applications for normal passports and seaman’s passports can be submitted via the Police’s e-services portal. Strong electronic authentication, such as online banking codes, a mobile ID or a Citizen Certificate, is needed to use the e-services portal.
You can complete your passport application online without visiting a police station in person if you meet the following eligibility criteria:
** You have given your fingerprints and a signature for an earlier passport issued no more than six years ago. In addition to a normal passport or a passport for a resident of the Åland Islands, this earlier passport can be a temporary passport, a temporary Åland Islands passport, a diplomatic passport or a service passport.
** The earlier passport does not need to be valid. The applicant must have been at least 12 years old when the previous passport was issued, as children under the age of 12 are not fingerprinted.
** The applicant must still have the fingers from which fingerprints were taken and those fingers must not be in a visibly worse condition than at the time of fingerprinting. If it has not been possible to fingerprint you due to a permanent impediment, your passport application can be processed without your needing to visit a police station in person as long as the other conditions are satisfied.
** Your name has not changed since your last passport was issued. If your name has changed since your last passport was issued, the signature held in the passport register will no longer be up to date.
** Applications must be accompanied by a sufficiently recent photograph that complies with the relevant guidelines, supplied in electronic format. If the passport register contains a photograph of you which is less than six months old, the system will allow you to use it in your application.
** This is usually not the case, and you must supply a new photograph via the licence services photograph server. The Police will compare your new photograph to any earlier ones. If the officer responsible for processing your application is unable to verify that the photographs are of the same person, he or she will ask you to come to the police station to be identified in person.
** You can opt for the fast-track or express procedure online only if your application does not require you to visit a police station in person. This is because the number of fast-track and express applications that can be processed in a day is limited.
** If a visit in person is needed, you can opt for the fast-track or express procedure when you come to the police licence services point. You will have to pay the difference between the price of a standard passport application and that of a fast-track/express application at that time.
** Applications submitted online must be paid for via online banking. Applications cannot be processed until payment has been received. The e-services portal cannot be used in situations where you want a new passport without cancelling your existing one.
Applying for a passport for a minor online:
Guardians can also apply for passports for their children online. All guardians must give consent to the application. Consent can be given electronically or on paper. Any guardians who did not file the application will have a request for consent waiting for them in the e-services portal.
** Responding to these requests requires logging into the e-services portal. Affixing a scanned copy of a guardian’s consent to the application is not sufficient. The minor for whom the passport is intended must be present if the application requires a visit to the police station.
** Passport applications for babies who have not yet been named cannot be processed. Make sure that your child’s name has been entered into the Population Information System before applying for a passport for a newborn baby.
