The Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship:
This Scholarship has been offered every year since 1978 to honour of our late Chairman, former Rhodes Scholar, Sir Harry D. Butterfield, whose distinguished career in public and business life was dedicated to the betterment of Bermuda and Bermudians.
This Scholarship is for applicants commencing or already pursuing an undergraduate degree overseas at an accredited college or university.
This award has an annual value of BD $25,000 and is tenable for up to four years of study overseas at an accredited university.
The Sir A. Dudley Spurling Postgraduate Scholarship:
This Scholarship has been offered every year since 1986 in memory of Sir A. Dudley Spurling; sportsman, former member for Education, past Speaker of the House of Assembly and, at the time of his passing, Vice-Chairman of Butterfield’s Board of Directors.
This scholarship is for applicants who have obtained an undergraduate degree and are commencing or pursuing an advanced degree overseas at an accredited university.
This award has an annual value of BD $25,000 and is tenable for up to four years of study overseas at an accredited university.
Scholarship Terms and Conditions:
1. A Postgraduate Scholarship and Undergraduate Scholarship will be awarded every year by Butterfield to Bermudians who possess outstanding character, scholastic abilities and demonstrate financial need. They will provide financial assistance to students over a period not exceeding four years or when the degree noted on their application is complete, which ever comes first. The scholarships are tenable only for study outside of Bermuda, at an accredited college/university selected by the candidate and approved by the Scholarship Committee of Butterfield.
2. The selection of scholarship recipients will be made by a Scholarship Committee composed of Senior Executives and or any other persons whom the Committee shall see fit to appoint.
3. The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to withhold the Scholarship awards; it is also at liberty to make a second award, for a shortened period of time, should an existing Scholarship become vacant for any reason.
4. The Scholarship Committee will pay special attention to academic excellence, sporting and civic attainments, the candidate’s ability to lead as well as financial need.
5. The Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of merit without regard to race, political affiliations, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability or family circumstances.
6. Applications will be considered from students who have received notice of acceptance from an accredited college/ university. Consideration will also be given to those students who are currently studying at an accredited college/university.
7. The following are required qualifications for all applicants:
** must be Bermudian (PRC students are not eligible)
** must have completed five years of schooling in Bermuda
8. All applications for Butterfield scholarships will be processed using ONLY the Bermuda Scholarship’s website at www.bermudascholarships.com. The Bermuda Scholarships online application must be accompanied by:
** the Bermuda Scholarships online “Student Profile”, completed in FULL. Noting “see resume” is NOT acceptable
** A written letter from one or more local schools attesting that the applicant has completed a minimum of five years of education in Bermuda
** up-to-date academic certificates/official transcripts, together with full details of grades attained in the various subjects from the current academic institution
** in the case of an applicant under the age of 18 years, a Certificate from the Ministry of Home Affairs attesting to the fact that at least one parent possesses Bermudian status under the Bermuda Immigration and Protection Act 1956, or that at least one parent possessed, at the time of death, such status or Bermudian domicile under the Immigration Act 1937
** in the case of an applicant of the age of 18 years or more, a Certificate from the Ministry of Home Affairs attesting to the fact that he or she possesses Bermudian status
** a completed Confidential Statement of Expenditure from the parents/guardians of ALL applicants (or applicant if self-sufficient)
** a written general submission which will include career intentions, details of involvement in and recognition of honours obtained in sports, civic and extra-curricular activities; and why considered qualified to be awarded the Scholarship
** a letter of acceptance from an approved university
** a reference from a school counsellor, principal or college/ university professor attesting to the academic qualification of the candidate
** a letter from the parent/guardian undertaking to accept responsibility for additional funds over and above the Scholarship award, necessary to maintain the scholar at an education institution abroad
9. Responsibility for the submission of the required documents, on or before to the stated deadline below, rests entirely with each applicant. Butterfield will not follow up with applicants to obtain missing documentation.
10.The closing date for applications is the last Friday in March each year. Provide yourself with enough time to troubleshoot or contact the Bermuda Scholarships’ helpdesk in the event that you experience difficulty uploading, inputting or forwarding your application detail, as applications received after the deadline will NOT be accepted.
11. The winners of these Scholarships may hold other awards from sources granted on the basis of financial need, academic or athletic merit. The recipient must disclose details of any other awards accepted to the Scholarship Committee. The Scholarship Committee must be satisfied that the aggregate value of such awards, when added to the Scholarship, does not exceed the Committee’s estimate of the cost of tuition, materials and living expenses. If so, the Scholarship Committee reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship.
12. The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to withdraw the Scholarship award at any time if the work or conduct of the recipient proves to be unsatisfactory. The recipient is required to provide the Committee with a written progress report and official transcripts after each academic term.
13. The Scholarship Committee will review all applications and will select a shortlist of candidates who will be contacted.
