Senior Citizens Grant :
Overview:
The grant is a one time payment but paid every consecutive year. The amount of €300 is paid to those elderly persons who have already reached their 75th birthday on the 1st of January 2014, or on a pro-rata basis from the date of the 75th birthday up to the end of the year.

Eligibility:
Elderly persons who:
(i) reside in their own residence in Malta or Gozo;
(ii) reside with their relatives in their residence in Malta or Gozo
Procedure:
Payment will be effected by a means of a cheque addressed to the elderly person at his / her own residence or at the residence of the relatives with whom he / she is residing. Alternatively, it could be deposited in a bank account as provided by the elderly person.
In cases where the elderly person dies, no refunds are collected from the payment pertaining to the period after death however, refund will be collected in those cases where the elderly person stops residing in his or her own residence or with his / her relatives in their residence, and starts receiving a fully funded state financed residential service or in any other residence not financed by the State, up to the end of the year.
This benefit is awarded:
(a) automatically to those elderly persons who receive a pension from the Department of Social Security
(b) following a claim made by elderly persons who do not receive a pension from the Department of Social Security
In circumstances related to (b) a claim must be submitted on the form provided by the DSS. The form may be obtained from any District Office of the Social Security Department or else can be downloaded by clicking here.

Widows Pension :
Description :
** A widow/er, whose spouse satisfies the relevant contribution conditions on his/her death, is entitled to a Widow/er’s Pension or to a Survivor’s Pension, whichever is the most beneficial.
** Widow’s Pension or Survivor’s Pension is awarded to those persons whose spouse was already in receipt of a Retirement Pension or Two-Thirds Pension.
** Early Survivor’s Pension is awarded to those persons whose spouse was still under retirement age on the date of his/her demise.
Eligibility :
A widow/er, who is under retiring age, may be eligible to Widow’s Pension, if the following criteria are fulfilled:
1. The spouse, upon his/her death, has satisfied the relevant contribution conditions :
a. Paid a minimum of 156 contributions
b. Has been in employment or self-occupation for not less than 10 years
c. Satisfies the relevant contribution conditions
2. A claim for a Widow’s Pension has to be lodged not later than six months following the death of spouse. If more than six months elapse, the pension is paid from the first Saturday following the date of the claim.
3. A widow/er who is in gainful activity is liable to pay the Social Security contributions if her earnings from such gainful activity exceed the National Minimum Wage. The employer is liable to pay all the statutory bonuses from his end.
4. If a widow/er earns less than the National Minimum Wage s/he may opt not to pay the Social Security Contributions.
5. A widow/er who reaches pension age and continues with her gainful occupation shall continue to pay Social Security Contributions.
6. A widow’s pension is also payable in full without any deductions if widow is carrying out a full-time gainful occupation and, where a widow re-marries, a flat rate widow’s pension will be due.
7. A widow who re-marries is entitled to a flat rate widow’s pension.
8. A Widow’s Pension is awarded as from the day following the spouse’s date of death.
