Frequently Asked Questions :
1. When did acts of birth, marriage and death start being kept at the Public Registry?
Birth, marriage and death registrations date back to the year 1863.

2. What about records before 1863?
Records prior to that year were drawn up by ecclesiastical authorities and can be found only in church archives. Thus baptismal, marriage and death certificates before 1863 can only be obtained from the relative parishes in Malta and Gozo.

3. Is it possible to order family tree searches from the Public Registry?
The Public Registry can only issue birth, marriage and death certificates when all the relative particulars are forwarded by the applicant. However, searches into family trees are carried out by private genealogists.

4. Does the Public Registry in Gozo have its own website wherein one can apply on-line for civil status certificates? And how can one apply for birth/marriage/death certificates which occurred there?
The Public Registry in Gozo does not have certificates on-line service. Notwithstanding this, one can still apply and pay on-line to obtain Extract Certificates of all birth/marriage/death which occurred in Gozo, by logging on the Public Registry Malta website. In the same way one can also order and pay on-line for Full Certificates namely birth/death certificates occurring in Gozo after November 1993 and all marriages celebrated in Gozo as from 1995 to date.

However, applications for Full Certificates BEFORE the said dates cannot be processed by the Public Registry, Malta and can only be acquired by applying by post to the Director, Public Registry, Republic Street, Victoria, Gozo, telephone no. 2155 6470 / 2155 3732, e-mail address pubreg.gozo@gov.mt.

All web browsers have cookies enabled by default. Further information on how we use cookies can be found in our Privacy Policy.

6. Do I need to have an e-ID account to apply for a certificate?
