The Department employs 2 full time Examiners who between them are able to undertake tests in all categories. From time to time, the Department utilises the services of visiting Driving Examiners from England and the Isle of Man. Typically, waiting times for driving tests can be as much as 6 to 8 weeks so prospective candidates are advised to book early. The Department holds a register of driving instructors but is not able to recommend particular instructors or schools.

Booking the Test in Guernsey:
Tests can be booked online at traffic.gov.gg (except for category D1, D, D1E, DE, Public Service Vehicle tests or for a retest following a period of disqualification). All of these tests needs to be booked at the Department’s offices.

The booking site will enable you to view the availability of test slots suited to your licence category. You will be able to book and pay for them using a debit or credit card. Confirmation of booking and payment will be sent to your email address. Should you not have access to a debit/credit card you will have to visit the Department’s offices to book and make payment in cash or by cheque between 8.45am and 4.30pm (Monday to Friday). The Department is unable to accept bookings over the telephone.

When booking your driving test in person, please remember to bring the following:
** Provisional Driving Licence (BOTH plastic card and paper counterpart)
** Theory test pass certificate
** Valid C.B.T. certificate (motorcycle candidates only)
** Payment for the test – this can only be made at the time of booking.

The latest fees for the practical driving can be found in the downloads at the bottom of this page.

A 2.0% charge is levied against payments made by credit card. This charge does not apply to debit/switch card payments.

Please note that, although the Department will always try its best to accommodate your requirements, test spaces do get booked up well in advance, often for 6 to 8 weeks at a time, so it is advisable to book early.

When the test has been booked, you will be given a booking confirmation letter. Please retain this as you will need it when taking the actual test.

Cancellations or Relocating your Booking:
If you need to cancel your driving test, then please try to give us as much notice as possible. The Department is only able to refund the test fee if the cancellation is made at least seven clear calendar days in advance (excluding the date the candidate cancels on and the date of the test).

If the cancellation is made with less than seven clear calendar days notice, the test fee can only be refunded if the test was cancelled on medical grounds and a doctor’s certificate is provided. If you have given seven clear calendar days notice you will be given a Payment Token by the booking system which will allow you to rebook in the future at your convenience.

If you wish to change the date/time of your appointment more than seven clear calendar days in advance, you may log into your existing booking and check other available dates/times and relocate your rebooking at no cost.

You can cancel and/or relocate your test online at traffic.gov.gg.
