The work permit is usually issued upon the application of the employer. The basic condition for the issue of a permit is the current labour market situation and a shortage of adequate domestic candidates.

In special cases, expressly laid down by law, foreigners can apply for a work permit themselves. The issue of the permit is then related to your foreigner status or the nature of your work, and the permit is issued regardless of the labour market situation.
The personal work permit with a validity of one year :
** self-employed (running a business as a sole proprietor, carrying out independent professional activities or establishing a private company)
** a self-employed worker who migrates daily for work
** a self-employed foreigner with a long-term resident status in a EU member state.
The personal work permit with a validity of three years
Applications for work permits are permitted if the applicant falls into any of the following categories:
** if the applicant is an immediate family member of a foreigner with a permanent residence permit or a refugee and holds a valid temporary residence permit for family reunion purposes;
** if the applicant is a self-employed foreigner and has been self-employed in Slovenia for at least 20 months within last 24-month period and is registered in the Business Register;
** if the applicant is a foreigner with a vocational education or National Vocational Qualifications acquired in Slovenia and has been registered with social insurance for at least 20 months within the last 24-month period;
** if the applicant is a daily migrant worker and has been registered with social insurance for at least 20 months within the last 24-month period;
** if the applicant is a foreigner who has completed the last year of schooling in Slovenia and has completed higher education and will find employment or become self-employed by no later than six months from the issue of the personal work permit;
** if the applicant is a foreigner who has finished a research work programme in Slovenia and will find employment or become self-employed no later than six months from the issue of the personal work permit;
** if the applicant is an immediate family member of a foreigner referred to in the previous point; or
** if the applicant is an immediate family member of a foreigner holding the status of researcher.
A personal work permit for special categories of foreigners and a personal work permit on the basis of a treaty can be obtained by the following persons:
** applicants for international protection;
** foreigners with temporary protection status;
** victims of human trafficking and victims of illegal employment;
** persons with subsidiary protection;
** pursuant to a treaty for the period stipulated therein
Employment permit:
An employment permit can only be issued, upon the application of the employer, for a period of up to one year with an option for an extension.
On the basis of an employment permit one can, as a citizen of a non-EU country, be employed only by the employer who obtained the permit for you and can only perform the work for which the permit was issued.
Work authorisations:
Work authorisations are issued for seasonal work in agriculture and forestry, for company representatives, for training and further training, for work performed by posted foreign workers with or without a commercial presence, for additional training, for intra-company transfers and for individual services.
