Here you will find all the information you need to know about registering a business name in Australia.
You will need to have an ABN or be in the process of applying for one with through the Australian Business Register website.
This includes guidance on business name searches, how to get an Australian Business Number (ABN) or apply for a trademark, what business name classifications mean as well as outlining our registration fees.
1 Before you start :
Before you register a business name with us, there are a number of things you should consider in your planning. As a starting point, the Business.gov.au website has a number of resources that you might find useful.
During the application process, you will need to provide your Australian Business Number, individual and birth details, an email address, residential address and an address for service of documents. Browse through the below content to find out how this information will be used.
We will automatically select your entity type based on the ABN that you provide. However for those that are exempt from needing an ABN, you must provide us with information about the type of entity that will hold the business name. For example, whether it will be an individual, company or partnership.
Individual details: This will be the business name holders’ name.
Birth details: This includes the date of birth and country.
Email address: This will be used to send out notices.
Residential address: This must be a physical or street address. A post office box is not acceptable.
The address will not be displayed on our public register and will be used for administrative or law enforcement purposes only.
Address for service of documents: This must be a physical or street address or post office box address.
The address will be displayed on our public register and will only be used to send out notices.
Steps to register your business name :
Here are the steps you will need to complete as part of registering your business name.
1 Go to ASIC Connect Opens external window and log in to your account – When you log in for the first time, you will be prompted to add any existing business names to your account. Select ‘No’ and then ‘Licenses and Registrations’.
2 Enter your Australian Business Number (ABN) – You must have either an ABN or an ABN application reference number.
3 Enter the proposed business name and registration period – Make sure the proposed business name is available to register. Registration periods are for either one year ($33) or three years ($76).
4 Enter the proposed business name holder details- Enter the proposed business name holder details in the fields provided.
5 Enter the addresses of the proposed business name – You must provide an address for service of documents, a principal place of business address and an email address. An SMS address is optional.
6 Confirm the eligibility to hold the proposed business name – Read the eligibility requirements of a business name holder.
7 Review your application – Check that the information displayed is correct.
8 Make your declarations- – Read the declaration to ensure you agree with the conditions of the transaction.
9 Make your payment – You can choose to pay your registration fee using a credit card, BPAY or alternatively you can request an invoice.
10 Confirmation – This will confirm your transaction has been submitted with ASIC.
