Types of Medical Registration :
Under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, as in force in each state and territory, there is a range of registration categories under which a doctor can practise medicine in Australia.
General registration is available to Australian & New Zealand medical school graduates who have completed approved intern training
Different categories apply to different types of registration. More information about these categories is published below.
Categories of medical registration are;
1 General registration
2 Specialist registration
3 Provisional registration
4 Limited registration
5 Non-practising registration
The Board can also grant student registration to medical students undertaking an approved program of study.
1 General registration :
General registration is available to;
i) medical practitioners who have previously held general registration and are seeking to return to practise
ii) international medical graduates who have completed the requirements of the competent authority pathway or the standard pathway.
2 Specialist registration :
s available to medical practitioners who have been assessed by an AMC accredited specialist college as being eligible for fellowship. Fellowship is not a pre-requisite for specialist registration.
The Ministerial Council has approved a list of specialties, fields of specialty practice and specialist titles.
Medical practitioners with the necessary qualifications in the approved specialties will be included on the Specialist Register and their specialist title will be protected by law.
During the transition to the National Law, a range of other medical practitioners were able to be included on the specialist register as a ‘one-off‘transitional arrangement.
These included:
1 Medical practitioners on the general practice vocational register on 30 June 2010
2 Medical practitioners recognised as specialists by a state or territory medical board
3 Medical practitioners who had been recognised by Medicare Australia as specialists after being assessed by a Specialist Recognition Advisory Committees (SRACs) or an Overseas Specialist Advisory Committees (OSACs)
As this was a transitional arrangement, no other medical practitioners will be eligible to be recognised as specialists through these routes after 30 June 2010.
The Board’s publicly available specialist register will be accessed by Medicare Australia to verify that a practitioner’s patients are able to obtain a specialist level rebate.
The list of specialties, fields of specialty practice and related specialist titles is available under Specialties and Specialty Fields.
Specialists Register :
AHPRA publishes an online Register of Medical Practitioners that provides the profession and the public with up to date information about a practitioner’s registration status. This now includes a Specialists Register, including details of practitioners’ specialty and field of specialty practice, consistent with the list of specialties, fields of specialty practice and specialist titles approved by the Ministerial Council.
