John Snow Scholarship:

The John Snow Scholarship is one of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine’s (AFPHM) programs aimed at strengthening and enhancing education in public health medicine at all levels of the career pathway.

Last Date – 3 October 2014.

About the scholarship :
The Scholarship aims to increase the proportion of medical students who are able to identify;
a) public health medicine as a medical specialty or potential career, and
b) the AFPHM as the learned college for public health medicine training.

This will be achieved through a national competition inviting medical students to;
i) Identify a piece of written work relating to any of the AFPHM competencies that they have submitted for formative or summative assessment to their medical school,
ii) Reflect on this piece of work, and
iii) Submit both the piece of work and reflection for assessment and selection of a state/territory prize winner by AFPHM Fellows and trainees.

Each year, up to nine (9) scholarship recipients, representing each Australian state/territory and New Zealand, are provided with travel assistance (up to AUD $600) and full registration to attend next year’s AFPHM National Annual Scientific Meeting to present their work and compete for the national prize.

This strategy was chosen because it builds on, rather than adding to or interfering with, any medical school’s public health curriculum, and because it facilitates deeper learning by requiring students to reflect on their previous work.

History of John Snow and the scholarship :
John Snow was an English physician who is widely considered to be one of the founding fathers of epidemiology and public health. In 1854, when illness was thought to be caused by ‘miasma’ (bad air), he mapped the geographic location of cases during a cholera outbreak in London and conducted case-control and cohorts studies which identified the Broad Street pump as the source of the illness. On this basis, he organised for the pump handle to be removed, thus controlling the outbreak – a classic example of a public health intervention. This is commemorated in the AFPHM logo which includes a water pump with no handle.

The John Snow Scholarship was introduced in 2009. Since its introduction the scholarship has recognised the work of medical students with an interest in public health and given them the opportunity for intellectual and social discourse with other like-minded medical students and AFPHM Fellows and trainees at the Royal Australian College of Physicians’ Annual Congress
