RDW Vehicle Registration Card
Introduction new two-piece vehicle registration certificate in the Netherlands:
From 1 January 2014, in the Netherlands vehicle registration certificates in a credit card format are issued.

This card has a different layout, different data, and different authenticity features, in conformity with harmonized European legislation. Vehicle registration certificates in a credit card format, or vehicle registration card, also have a contact chip.
From 1 January 2014, vehicle registration certificates continue to consist of two parts. Besides part I, the vehicle registration card, a new ‘deel II’ (part II) vehicle registration certificate is also introduced. This part II vehicle registration certificate is needed to register abroad.
Five-year transition period:
From 1 January 2014 – 31 December 2018, there are both vehicles with a paper vehicle registration certificate and vehicles with a vehicle registration card. This is the result of the fact that owners/keepers are not obliged to exchange their paper vehicle registration certificates at their own initiative.
After this five-year period, RDW is expected to start obligatory conversion of paper vehicle registration certificates that are still active. At that time, further details about the process will be given.
Authenticity features :
The vehicle registration certificate in a credit card format is in conformity with European Directive 1999/37/EC. It contains all data imposed by the European Directive.
The vehicle registration certificate in a credit card format contains both vehicle data and owner/keeper data. The vehicle registration card contains several authenticity features. For more information, please visit ‘Echtheidskenmerken’ (authenticity features).
Validity :
Validity of vehicle registration cards can be checked based on the vehicle license number and the document number. Please go to ‘Documentnummer controleren’ (Check document number).
Insurance Register:
Insurance companies and authorized agents are obliged to report changes to insurance to the Central Register of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (Dutch CRWAM). RDW manages this register.
Submit and process changes online:
RDW has 2 web applications that can be used by insurance companies and authorized agents to safely submit changes (also called mutations) to the insurance register on-line.
There is a CRWAM application for individual changes. It can be used to make single mutations, but also to consult RDW registers and register changes to insurance policies covering company stock. Besides, a Motor Insurance Liability Act declaration (Dutch WAM declaration) can be issued digitally.
You can exchange files with RDW via the Internet (so-called batch processing) to make multiple changes simultaneously or to request several lists. The application to be used for this purpose is WEBREB.
Vehicle Safety :
Needless to say, great care is taken when vehicles are being manufactured. However, there is still a slight chance that vehicle parts may be defective. If a defect is more common in particular vehicles and involves a risk of physical injury, the manufacturer of the vehicle must organise a product recall.
In the event of a product recall, producers and distributors recall the vehicle or vehicle part in order to resolve a defect. This article contains detailed information about product recalls and the role played by the RDW.
