You live in the Netherlands and your child was born in the Netherlands:
The SVB will contact you 2 – 4 weeks after you register the child’s birth. You can then claim child benefit online via My SVB. Log in with your DigiD code and fill in the claim form.

Submitting a claim using your DigiD code:
If you have not heard from us by 4 weeks after you registered the birth, please contact us.

If further children are born, you do not need to do anything. We will adjust your child benefit entitlement automatically.

Register your child with your health insurer:
It is important to register your child with your health insurer within 4 months of the birth. If you do not do so, there is a possibility that your health insurer will not reimburse you for the medical expenses.

You live outside the Netherlands:
If you live outside the Netherlands, you can claim Dutch child benefit if you live in an EU or EEA Member State or another country with which the Netherlands has a social security agreement and you are insured under the Dutch child benefit scheme (AKW). Other situations:
You are not yet receiving child benefit, and one of the following situations applies to you:
** a child has started living with you
** a child lives with you but the person who claimed the child benefit lives somewhere else or has moved out
** you have adopted a child
** you have started looking after a foster child
** your partner’s child has started living with you

In that case, you can claim child benefit using your DigiD code. If you already receive child benefit and you have started looking after a foster child or an adopted child, you can use your DigiD code to report this as a change in domestic circumstances.
