Claiming An AIO Supplement:

A few months before you reach the AOW pension age, you can submit your claim for an AOW pension. We will then calculate the amount you are entitled to.

If your income is likely to be under a certain minimum level after you reach the AOW pension age, we will send you a letter explaining how you can check whether you qualify for an AIO supplement. If so, we will send you a claim form.

Around six months before your reach the AOW pension age, we will send you a letter about claiming your AOW pension. You do not have to do anything about the AIO supplement. We will contact you about the supplement after you claim your AOW pension.

If you are under the AOW pension age:
If you are still under the AOW pension age, you cannot get an AIO supplement from the SVB. However, you can apply to your municipal authorities for assistance.

What is an AIO supplement?:
A minimum income has been established so that everyone can have at least a minimum acceptable standard of living. If you have an AOW pension and your total income is below the minimum income level, you can get an AIO supplement to bring your income up to the level of the minimum income.

If you have reached the AOW pension age:
About six months before you reach the AOW pension age, we will send you a letter about claiming your AOW pension. If you have not always been insured in the Netherlands, e.g. because you have lived outside the Netherlands, you may not receive the full AOW pension. In that case, you may be able to get an AIO supplement. If you receive an AOW pension without a supplementary allowance for a partner, and you or your partner have little or no other income, you may qualify for an AIO supplement.

The AIO supplement will start when you reach the AOW pension age, unless you claim it at a later date, in which case the AIO supplement will take effect on the date of your claim.

You can also claim an AIO supplement if you are already receiving an AOW pension at less than the full rate, and you have little or no other income.

If you have not yet reached the AOW pension age:
If you are under the AOW pension age and your income is below the minimum income level, you can claim income support (national assistance) from your municipal authorities. To do so, you will need to go to the Social Services department (Sociale Dienst) or the Work and Income department (Dienst Werk en Inkomen).

What is special assistance?:
You may suddenly face large expenses. For instance, because your heating breaks down, or you need new glasses. If your income is so low that you cannot pay these expenses at once, you may be able to get help from your municipal authorities (gemeente) in the form of special assistance (bijzondere bijstand).

When can you get an AIO supplement?:
Everyone has a right to a minimum income. Every year, the government establishes the amount of the minimum income. If your income is below the set amount, and you have reached the AOW pension age, you can claim an AIO supplement.

You can get an AIO supplement if:
** you live in the Netherlands
** your income is below the set minimum income, and
** you do not have more than a certain amount of capital
