How to Get Your First Driver License :

** If you are a new driver, the first step to get a NYS driver license is to apply for a learner permit at a DMV office.

Once you have your learner permit, you must :
** Follow the rules for learner permit holders

Prepare for your road test:
** Have supervised driving practice with a minimum of 50 hours including 15 hours of driving after sunset for Class DJ or MJ learner permits
** Take a pre-licensing or driver education course
** Schedule and take your road test
** If you have an out-of-state driver license and become a NYS resident, you must exchange it for a NYS driver license within 30 days.

Eligibility :
** You must be a NYS resident and age 16 or over to apply for a learner permit.

Guidance :
** Learn more about the paperwork you need to fill out and additional documents you will need to apply for a permit, driver license or non-driver ID card (MV-44.1).

Fees :
** When you apply for a learner permit, the fee includes the written test, two road tests and your driver license.
** The learner permit is valid for five years.
** The fee for a driver license is between $64.25 and $107.50 , depending on your age, the type of license and where you live.

** Residents of Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn) New York (Manhattan) Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester counties must pay an additional Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) fee.

** The fee is $1.00 for every six months the permit will be in effect.

How To :
** Before you go to the DMV to apply for your learner permit, you should study the NYS Driver’s Manual and take the practice tests.

When you go to the DMV to apply for your learner permit, you must:
** Pass a written test based on the Driver’s Manual
** Meet DMV’s vision requirements
** Bring the items listed below

Ready to apply for your learner permit at the DMV? Have with you:
** Proof of your identity and age
** Your Social Security Card or proof that you are not eligible for a Social Security Card
** A completed Application for Driver License or Non-Driver ID Card (DMV form MV-44)
** Payment for the fees (cash, check, money order or credit card).

Schedule a Road Test :
Eligibility :
You must have :
** A valid NYS learner permit
** Completed a 5-hour pre-licensing course or a driver education course through a high school or college
** An original Pre-licensing course certificate (MV278) or Driver Education Completion certificate (MV-285) to give to the license examiner when you take your road test

** If under age 18, you must wait at least six months from the date you received your learner permit to schedule your road test.

Fees :
** The application fee you paid when you obtained your learner permit includes two road tests.
** If you do not pass your first two road tests, you must purchase two more road tests before you can schedule another one.
** The fee is $10.00 for two tests.

** Make sure you have at least one unused test
** Go to “Schedule Now”
** Enter the required information and click “log on”
** Keep the confirmation for your records or write down the information .

Ready to schedule? You must have:
** An original Pre-licensing course certificate (MV-278) or Driver Education Completion certificate (MV-285)
** The Client ID Number from your learner permit
** Purchased additional road tests if you failed your first two
** The ZIP Code of the road test location where you want to take the road test
** After you schedule your road test, be sure you know what you need to do on the day of your appointment.
