Obtain Birth Certificate :

Certified copies of birth certificates (with a raised seal) are issued and acceptable for various uses, such as:
** Personal identification
** Employment

** Passport application
** Social Security

** There are three ways to obtain a certified copy of a birth certificate.
Be sure to complete all required information on the application form provided within each link :
1. Order Online thru VitalChek, the authorized service provider for the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
2. Order Birth Certificates by Mail
3. Order in person at one of these six public office locations :
** Pittsburgh
** Scranton
** Philadelphia
** Erie
** Harrisburg
** New Castle

Please note :
** Processing times vary by site. You may select the links above for additional information on specific processing times in our public offices.

Cost :
** There is a $20 fee for each certified copy.
** Check or money order should be made payable to Vital Records.
** This fee may be waived for individuals who served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces or their dependents.
** The Armed Forces fee waiver does not apply to genealogical requests.
** An additional fee is charged by Vitalchek for using the online ordering process.
** The Division of Vital Records does not accept cash for any transactions.

Who May Request a Birth Certificate?
** Only certain people can request a birth certificate.
You must be :
** Person named on the birth certificate, who is 18 years of age or older (if under 18, immediate family member must apply)
** Legal representative
** Husband / wife
** Parent / step-parent*
** Brother / sister / half-brother / half-sister
** Son / daughter / stepson* / stepdaughter*
** Grandparent / great grandparent (specify maternal or paternal)
** Grandchild / great grandchild

Order Online :
** Pennsylvania Department of Health does not accept credit cards or online orders;
** however, for your convenience, you can process online request through an independent company that we have partnered with to provide you this service;VitalChek Network, Inc.
** All major credit cards are accepted including American Express®, Discover®, Mastercard® or Visa®.
** If you have ordered through another Internet vendor and have experienced a problem in obtaining the record ordered, you will need to contact that vendor directly.

** If you believe an Internet vendor’s website provides inaccurate information about service or fees, you may wish to consider reporting to the consumer protection office in the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office OR the consumer protection agency in the state where you reside or the vendor is located.

Online ordering is available for most requests; however some exceptions include :
** Birth occured in another country and registered in Pennsylvania.
** Certificate requested for genealogy purposes.
** Fee waiver for Armed Forces member or related to Armed Forces member.
** Certificate of Birth resulting in stillbirth.

** If the reason for your request or your relationship to individual does not appear in the online ordering drop-down box options, then you are not eligible to order the certificate online.
** Please review information on how to apply by mail or in person for a birth certificate or death certificate.

  1. I have sent all my papers to obtain certified copy of Birth Certificate to New Castle, PA. They signed the papers on May 22, 2018 and as of June 19, 2018 I have not received anything. Can somebody help me?

  2. If you were born before 1967 (1965), can you still get your copy of birth certificate on the same day?
