Vehicle Registration :

Tennessee law requires the titling and registration of every :
** motor vehicle,
** motorized bicycle,
** trailer,

** semi-trailer, and
** pole trailer that is driven or moved on a highway.
** County clerks across the state register vehicles and assist with these transactions.
** Review the information on these pages before visiting your county clerk to make sure that you bring the correct documentation and meet all legal requirements.

New Vehicle Registration :
To register/title a new vehicle, submit the following:
** Manufacturer’s statement of origin properly assigned on reverse side including the odometer
** Itemized Bill of Sale
** Security agreement or other proper lien instrument if lien is to be recorded
** Copy of current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES)
** Copy of current stationing orders indicating you are out of state
** Mailing address
** Daytime telephone number

Payment of the following fees :
** Sales Tax – The state sales tax rate is 7% of the purchase price, less the total value of any trade in.
** Local sales tax rates, which range from 1.50% to 2.75% depending on the locality, are imposed on the first $1,600 of the sale.
** Extended warranties, repair and maintenance plans are taxed separately.
** Additionally, a state single article tax of 2.75% must be paid on sale prices above $1,600.01, and up to $3,200.
** The maximum amount of tax for state single article tax is $44.
** License Plate Fee – $21.50/regular car plate (specialty or personalized plates extra)
** Title Fee – $11

Used Vehicle Registration :
To register/title a used vehicle*, submit the following:
** Previous owner’s title properly assigned on reverse side including odometer on conforming titles (non-conforming titles require a separate odometer statement)
** Title extension form (if back of title is full and vehicle was bought from a dealer)
** Copy of current LES
** Copy of stationing orders indicating you are out of state
** Mailing address
** Daytime phone number

Payment of the following fees :
** Sales Tax – The state sales tax rate is 7% of the purchase price, less the total value of any trade in.
** Local sales tax rates, which range from 1.50% to 2.75% depending on the locality, are imposed on the first $1,600 of the sale.

Vehicle Registration – Current Residents :
To register your new vehicle, you will need to submit to your local county clerk the following :
** Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin
** New Vehicle Invoice
** Copy of your current registration if transferring your license plate

To register a used vehicle, submit to your resident county clerk the following:
** Valid certificate of title properly assigned along with an Odometer Disclosure Statement, if applicable
** Copy of the current registration if transferring your license plate
** Please note that Applications for Registration are only processed through your local county clerk.

Titling a Vehicle : (New Residents or Those Relocating to Tennessee)
** New residents and those relocating to the state can obtain a vehicle title from their local county clerk’s office after emissions testing (if it is required by the county).
** For locations and hours of emissions testing facilities, visit the Department of Environment and Conservation’s website.
** The Vehicle Inspection Program is found under the Air Pollution Control Division.

To obtain a vehicle title, bring :
** proof of identification and proof of residency
** passed emissions certificate (if applicable);
** most current out-of-state registration; and
** either the name and address of lienholder to whom you are making payments OR, in the event of no lienholder, your out-of-state title.

Duplicate Registration :
A request for a duplicate certificate of registration can be mailed to your local county clerk and must include :
** license plate number,
** vehicle identification number,
** $3 fee (plus additional $0.50 if the request requires certification).

Military Registrations :
** Members of the armed services can title, register, and transfer and renew registrations of their vehicles in the county where they are based.
** All transactions are done through the local county clerk.
** If Tennessee is listed as your home of record but you have no physical presence in the state, you can submit your application to any county clerk office.
** Please note that military personnel may have to pay county wheel taxes.
** Also, verify with your local county clerk whether your county requires emissions testing prior to vehicle registration and renewal.

Renewals :
To renew your vehicle registration, submit :
** current copy of your LES
** current copy of your stationing orders indicating you are out of state
** copy of your registration

payment of applicable fee :
** $21.50/regular car plate
** $56.50/personalized car plate
** $14.50/regular motorcycle plate
** $49.50/personalized motorcycle plate
** $1 transfer fee
