Registering a birth :
** You need to register a child born in Scotland within 21 days.
** You can register the birth at any registration office in Scotland by making an appointment.

Who can register a birth :
** Either parent can register the birth if they are married.
** The child’s mother will need to register the birth if the parents are not married.
** The father has to be there if his name is going to be added to the birth certificate.
How to register a birth :
** You should make an appointment at one of our registration offices
Registration offices are located in :
** Annan
** Castle Douglas
** Dalbeattie
** Dumfries
** Gretna
** Kirkconnel
** Kirkcudbright
** Langholm
** Lockerbie
** Moffat
** Newton Stewart
** Port William
** Sanquhar
** Stranraer
** Thornhill
** Whithorn
** Wigtown
You’ll need to provide the registrar with :
** a birth notification card from the hospital
** your name(s)
** your date(s) of birth
** your marriage certificate (if appropriate)
Birth certificates :
** You get one copy of the abbreviated birth certificate free when the birth is registered.
** You can also buy a full birth certificate for £10 within one month of registering.

A birth can also be re-registered at a later date to get an updated certificate if :
** details weren’t included for both parents
** the parents have married since the birth was registered
Copies of registration certificates :
** You can purchase additional copies of certificates for births, deaths, marriages or civil partnerships from us.
Costs :
You’ll have to pay a fee for your certificate :
** At registration or within one month of registering – £10
** When showing an original – £10
** All other copies – £15
** There is a £5 charge for replacements sent by post.
Information required :
You need to give us a few details :
** Birth certificates – the child’s full name, the date of birth, the place of birth and the mother’s maiden surname.
** Death certificates – the deceased person’s full name, the date of death and the place of death.
** Marriage certificates – the full names of both parties, the date of marriage and place of marriage.
** Civil partnership certificates – the full names of both partners, the date of partnership and the place of partnership.
Registering a death :
** You need to register a death in Scotland within 8 days. You can register the death at any registration office in Scotland by making an appointment.
Who can register a death :
The death can be registered by :
** any relative of the deceased person
** any person present at the death
** the deceased person’s executor or other legal representative
** the occupier of the property where the person died
** anyone who knows the information needed to register the death (if no-one else is available)
How to register a death :
** You should make an appointment at one of our registration offices
** Find your nearest registrar
You’ll need to provide the registrar with :
** the medical certificate of cause of death
** the deceased person’s birth certificate
** the deceased person’s marriage certificate (if appropriate)
** the deceased person’s NHS medical card
Some medical certificates are randomly selected for a review and paperwork can’t be issued until the review is complete.
Reviews can take up to 3 working days.

** You can also buy a full certificate for £10 within one month of registering.
