Apply For Free School Transport :
Who qualifies for free transport :
1. Outside the statutory walking distance :
If your child lives more than the distances shown below from their designated school they may be eligible for free home to school transport

** Under 8 years and lives more than 2 miles away.
** 8 years or over and lives more than 3 miles away.
2. Low income families :
** If your family receives the maximum level of Working Tax Credit or your child receives free school meals then they may be eligible for free transport to school.
Primary age pupils :
** Children 8 years and over are entitled if they are from a low income family and live more than 2 miles but less than 3 miles away from the designated school.
** If they live more than 3 miles they may qualify under the statutory walking distance criteria.
Primary church aided schools :
** We do not provide free transport for children so that they can attend a denominational primary school for religious reasons.
Secondary age pupils :
** Children from low income families can get free transport to one of the three schools nearest to where they live.
** The school must be more than two miles but less than six miles away. Distances up to two miles are determined by using the shortest available walking route.
** The six mile upper limit is measured using roads only.
Secondary church aided schools :
Children from low income families who want to attend a denominational school are entitled to free transport if
** the school is between 2 and 15 miles and
** is the nearest school preferred on the grounds of religion or belief.
3. Route safety issues :
** If you question the suitability of a walking route to your child’s designated school, the Road Safety Team will make a formal assessment based on national guidelines.
** The designated school is the school suitable to your child which serves your area, or if there is more than one school, the nearest suitable school to your home where a place is available.
** The Road Safety Team will look at the relationship between pedestrians and traffic not issues around personal security and assumes that the child is accompanied by a responsible adult.
** Please note there is no requirement for the route to be lit.
** No help will be given if alternative safe routes are available within the statutory walking distance.
4. Special educational needs and disabilities :
Your child may qualify for free or subsidised transport if:
** they are school age and have special educational needs
** they are aged 16-19 and have special educational needs
** either you as parents/carers or your child have a medical condition.
5. Not eligible?
** If your child is not eligible for free transport and is not on a public transport route you can make an online request for a seat on our contracted transport.
