Request a Copy of a Birth Certificate :
** We hold records for births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships which have taken place in Somerset since 1837.
** This page explains how you can get a copy of a birth certificate.

** You can buy a ‘short’ version of the certificate.
** This only gives the date, name and place of birth.
** These certificates are usually acceptable when you are applying, for example for a school placement, which does not have legal status.

** The ‘full’ version of the certificate includes details of the parents, and in most cases this is the version required by banks, the passport office and so on, when you have to provide proof of identity.
** If in doubt, do not select the short version of the certificate.
** Both versions cost the same.

** If you place your order before 2pm Monday to Friday, your certificate will be despatched the same day.
** Orders received after 2pm will be dispatched the next working day.
** We cannot guarantee when the Royal Mail will deliver the certificate to you if you choose to have it posted.
** Extra copies of certificates cost £10 each.
** When you apply you should provide as much information as possible about the entry you are looking for so that we can identify it correctly.

** We will search a minimum of two years either side of the date you have given.

While you Wait :
** We have a ‘While you Wait’ service and a copy of any certificate costs £30. You can apply in person at Somerset Heritage Centre, where the records are held.
** If you apply before 2pm your request will be processed within an hour and you can collect your certificate the same day.

** Please enclose a cheque or postal order made payable to Somerset County Council with your application.
** You will not be charged if we cannot find the entry.
