Apply for School Opal Card :
** The School Opal card gives eligible students free or discounted travel between home and school using the train, bus, ferry and light rail services you nominate in your application.

Who can apply :
To be eligible for a School Opal card, students may need to live a minimum distance from their school :
Years K-2 : (Infants)
** There’s no minimum distance.
Years 3-6 : (Primary)
** 1.6km straight line distance or 2.3km walking.
Years 7-12 : (Secondary)
** 2.0km straight line distance or 2.9km walking.
Who needs to apply :
** A new application is only required if the student has not had a School Opal card before.
** Parents whose children already have a School Opal card and are changing schools or campuses will need to update their Opal card for the new school year before mid-December at apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts.
How To Apply :
Applications for 2017 open at the start of Term 4, 2016.
Step 1 :
** Once the new school has confirmed the student’s enrolment, complete the application at transportnsw.info/school-students
Step 2 :
** Print, sign and date the completed application,then submit it to the student’s new school for endorsement.
Step 3 :
** The school then sends the endorsed application to Transport for NSW.
** Once approved, the School Opal card will be sent to the address provided on the application.
Better together :
The School Opal card is only for travel to and from school. So it’s a good idea to get a Child/ Youth Opal card for travel after hours, on weekends or during school holidays.
Child/Youth Opal card benefits :
** Concession fares across the Opal network
** Free travel after eight paid journeys each week*
** Set auto top up and link it to your credit or debit card so there’s always enough value on the card to travel.

Inside Opal network :
** Free travel to and from school on approved trains, buses and ferries with the School Opal card (on school days during specific times)
** Addition of light rail from the start of Term 3, 2016
Outside Opal network :
** Free travel to and from school on public transport services services with a school travel pass
** For boarding school students, free travel on NSW TrainLink Regional services and long distance coach services
** Subsidised travel to and from school in private vehicles in areas where there is no public transport
Adult Opal Card Fares :
** Adult tickets are for everyone aged 16 years and older, with the exception of NSW/ACT Senior Secondary Students and those eligible for a concession fare.
** If you don’t have an Opal card, you will need to purchase an Opal single trip ticket.
Daily and Weekly Caps :
** With an Adult Opal card you can travel as much as you want on trains, buses, ferries and light rail within the Opal network and you never pay more than $15.40 a day, $61.60 a week, or $2.60 on Sunday.
Please note that these capped fares will increase from 3 July as below.
** Weekday/Saturday – $15.40
** Sunday – $2.60
** Weekly – $61.60

** The Opal week runs from Monday to Sunday.
** The Sydney Airport station access fee isn’t included in the Daily, Weekly or Sunday Travel Caps.

** Children aged three years and under travel free.
** Child/Youth Opal cards and Opal single trip ticket are for children aged 4–15 years.
** Eligible full time NSW/ACT school students aged 16 years or older with their Secondary Student Concession Card also pay Child/Youth fares.
