Applying for a Birth Certificate :

** A birth certificate is an official certified copy of the registration data relating to the birth of a child.
** It is used as a document to assist in establishing an individual’s identity.

** Birth Certificates are required for many purposes, such as acquiring a passport, driver’s permit, marriage licence and school enrolment.

How can I obtain a Birth Certificate?
** You can apply for a birth certificate in person or by mail.
** Birth certificates can only be issued to individuals who have had their birth registered.

How do I apply in person?
** You can apply in person at any of the offices, sub-offices or TTPost Outlet locations listed on page 2 of the application form.
** Application forms can be obtained by following the link below.

** If you apply for the computer-generated birth certificate at the Registrar General’s Office, Port of Spain or at the sub-office in San Fernando you will receive the certificate on the same day of the application providing all information is verified as accurate.

** If you apply at any of the other sub-offices it will take a little longer.

How do I apply by mail?
** If you are applying by mail, you must visit a designated TTPost outlet and complete an application form, providing all relevant information with respect to the application.

** For information on which TTPost Outlets offer this service, please see page 2 of the application form or contact the Registrar General’s Office using the information provided at the end of this page. Application forms can be obtained by following the link below.

** Birth certificates are delivered to applicants through secure post.
** Incomplete application forms will be returned unprocessed.

How much does a Birth Certificate cost?
** The first issue of a computer-generated birth certificate is free of charge to each person.
** Each additional copy costs TT$25.00.

Who can register a birth?
** If the mother was married to the baby’s father at the time of the birth, the mother may register the birth without the father being present.
** If the mother and father were not married at the time of the birth, the father’s details can only be entered into the register if both parents attend together to register the birth.

** If the father’s details are not entered at the time of registration, it may be possible for this to be done at a later date.

** A legal guardian or person present at the birth can also register the birth.

What documents do I need?
** National ID Cards of the parents and informant.
** Birth Notification Card issued by the hospital or medical centre.
** Marriage certificate of the parents.
** Electronic Birth Certificates of the parents.
