How to Register & Re-register a Birth :
Book an appointment :
** Your baby’s birth must be registered within 42 days (6 weeks) from when they were born.
** Find out on GOV.UK who can register a birth.

** Please note that the online booking system cannot be used on a mobile or tablet.
Where to go :
** If your baby was born in West Sussex, you can register at any of our Registration Offices.
** If your baby was born outside of West Sussex, you may register ‘by giving a declaration of the birth’ at any of our Registration Offices.
** We have an arrangement with Surrey Registration Service to offer registrations of babies born at East Surrey Hospital, Redhill at our registration offices in Crawley, Horsham and Haywards Heath.
Who can register a birth :
For opposite sex couples :
** married to each other at the time of the birth, either parent may register
** not married to each other at the time of the birth, the mother may register alone.
** The father’s details can only be included if they are both present at the appointment.
Same-sex female couples :
For same-sex female couples :
** who are married or civil partners, either parent may register
** who are not married or civil partners at the time of conception, and meet the requirements of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act, the mother may register alone. The second female’s details can only be included if they are both present at the appointment.

What you need when registering a birth :
When registering the birth, you should know :
** place and date of the birth
** name, surname and sex of the baby
** parents’ names, surnames and address
** places and dates of parents’ birth
** date of parents’ marriage or civil partnership
** parents’ jobs
** mother’s maiden surname.
** You might not need to give all of this information, depending on who is registering the birth.
** You should bring at least one form of identification when you go to the register office.
You can bring :
** passport
** birth certificate
** deed poll
** driving licence
** proof of address (utility bill)
** Council Tax bill
** marriage or civil partnership certificate.
** During the appointment we will also issue your baby with a free West Sussex library card, giving you access to the many services for children and families in your local library.
How to re-register a birth in West Sussex :
** Your child’s birth details need to be re-registered if you wish to add the natural father’s details or if the parents have married each other since the birth.
** Adding the natural father’s details Download and complete form GRO185) from GOV.UK.
** Parents have married since registering the birth Download and complete form LA1 from GOV.UK.
** Information on where to send the completed form to can be found on the form.
** Alternatively, contact us and we will send you a copy of the form required.
