State Pension age and Benefits :
Since 6 April 2010, the age when women can claim their State Pension is gradually increasing to bring it in line with the State Pension age for men.The age when men and women can claim Pension Credit is also rising in line with changing State Pension age.
State Pension age :
The current State Pension age is:
** 65 for men born before 6 December 1953
** between 60 and 65 for women born between 6 April 1950 and 5 December 1953
Changes to State Pension age :
State Pension age will increase for both men and women to:
** 66 between 2018 and 2020
** 67 between 2026 and 2028
** 68 between 2044 and 2046
Who is affected by these changes?
** Changes to State Pension age from 65 to 66
** People born between 6 December 1953 and 5 October 1954 will reach State Pension age between 65 and 66.
** People born between 6 October 1954 and 5 April 1960 will have a State Pension age of 66.
** Changes to State Pension age from 66 to 67
** People born between 6 April 1960 and 5 March 1961 will reach State Pension age between 66 and 67.
** People born between 6 March 1961 and 5 April 1977 will have a State Pension age of 67.
** Changes to State Pension age from 67 to 68
** People born between 6 April 1977 and 5 April 1978 will reach State Pension age between 67 and 68.
** People born on or after 6 April 1978 will have a State Pension age of 68.
Will there be any further changes to the State Pension age?
** The Pensions Act NI (2015) provides for a regular review of the State Pension age to ensure that any further changes take place on a more regular basis. The review will take into account increases to life expectancy and other relevant factors. The first review will be completed by May 2017.
** After this review has reported, the Government may choose to bring forward changes to the State Pension age. Any proposals to do so will need to go through Parliament/General Assembly before becoming law.
** The Government has no further plans to change the timetable to increasing the State Pension age up to 67.

Equal treatment rights for social security :
** The Gender Recognition Act 2004 gave transsexual people the right to be treated as their preferred gender.
** Transsexual people who were aged 60 before the Act came into force on 4 April 2005 can now apply for equal treatment rights for social security purposes.
This means they may be able to :
** claim State Pension from an earlier date
** have National Insurance contributions or periods from their 60th birthday refunded
Who qualifies for equal treatment rights?
To qualify for equal treatment rights for periods before the Gender Recognition Act 2004 came into force, you must :
** have been born between 24 December 1919 and 3 April 1945
** provide evidence of relevant gender reassignment surgery before 4 April 2005
** If you have a full Gender Recognition Certificate, are married or in a civil partnership, you can still apply.
