Search and Preliminary Advice Services :
** You may use our Search and Preliminary Advice services before applying for a trademark on T1. It can tell you whether we will likely accept your trademark for registration.

Using this service can save you the money of applying an unregistrable trademark

** Search service (HK$400 plus HK$200 per each additional class of goods or services): we will tell you if there are any identical or similar marks on the Trade Marks Register.

Alternatively, you can search the Trade Marks Register yourself before making your application at our online Trade Mark Search system

** Preliminary advice service (HK$400 plus HK$200 per each additional class of goods or services): we will tell you if your mark is sufficiently distinctive or if we may raise any other types of objections against your mark.

Application Fees :
** HK$2,000 to apply to register a trade mark in one class of goods or services; and
** HK$1,000 for each additional class of goods or services.

** Payment can be made by cash or cheque payable to ‘The Government of the Hong Kong SAR”

How to fill in your trade mark application form?
Forms : T2

Optional form : T2A (used only if you are applying for a certification, collective, defensive mark, sound or smell mark, or if you claim a 3-dimensional shape or colour(s) as a trademark or an element of your trademark, or if you wish to include a disclaimer, limitation or condition.)

Submitting your application :
Please submit your application with fees to “Intellectual Property Department, 24/F, Wu Chung House, 213 Queen’s Road East, Wanchai, Hong Kong, China” by post or in person. Opening hours : 9:00 a.m. – 5:45 p.m. (Mon – Fri)

How to apply to register a trade mark in the Hong Kong SAR?
General introduction to registration :
** This document provides basic information on how to apply to register your trade mark in the HKSAR.
** Please read it carefully before you submit your application. The applications forms are also attached.

** A sample application form has also been included for your reference. Before you begin to fill out your form there are a number of points concerning your trade mark that you need to consider.

** These are listed in the “Before you apply” section and it is important that you pay particular attention to them as they could affect your application.

Our Search and Preliminary Advice Services :
** Before applying to register a trade mark it is necessary to find out if someone else has already registered or has applied to register the same or similar trade mark. The Trade Marks Registry offers Search and

** Preliminary Advice services to anyone who wishes to obtain information on trade marks from the Registry’s records.

** We can do a search of the records and supply a list of trade marks that are the same as or similar to your proposed trade mark and in respect of the same or similar class of goods or services.

** In addition to the search we can provide preliminary advice as to whether your proposed trade mark is sufficiently distinctive so that it distinguishes your goods and services from those of other traders.

** If you wish to use our Search and Preliminary Advice services, simply complete Forms T1 and submit it with the appropriate fee (HK$400 for each service plus HK$200 per each additional class of goods or services, if any) to the Registry at the address above.

** If you choose to search the Registry’s records yourself, please go to ipsearch.ipd.gov.hk (our full trade marks records are available online).

About Us :
Intellectual Property Department was established on 2 July 1990. The Department took over from the Registrar General’s Department the responsibility for the registration of patents and trade marks for goods and for other related matters.

The Director of Intellectual Property replaced the Registrar General as the Registrar of Trade Marks and Registrar of Patents. The Department also took over functions relating to copyright from the Attorney General’s Department.
