They will help you to
** decide which entity to trade as (eg sole trader, partnership or limited company)
** set up your business
** evaluate your business idea
** find premises
** understand your requirements
** be aware of any additional licences your business may legally require
Registering to trade as a sole trader or partnership :
** If you’re registering as a sole trader or partnership, you’ll need a business licence. You can fill in the application form online, but you’ll need to print off and sign the form before you submit your application.
** You can send your signed application by email or post or bringing your application form to the Social Security building in La Motte Street.
** Your application for a business licence will be reviewed by the business licensing team. They may need to contact you to check or update your residential status.
If your business licence is granted, your application will be passed to the :
** Jersey Financial Services Commission (if you’ve indicated that you are also applying for a registered business name)
** Social Security Department (to assess your personal contribution liability and register the business as an employer, if you are employing staff)
** Taxes Office (to set up a record if you’re employing staff and update your personal tax information)
If your business licence is refused, your application will not be processed any further. The business licensing team will write to you and confirm this.
Appealing our decision :
If your business licence application has been refused, you can appeal the decision. Details of how to do this can be found in the business licensing guidance notes.
Registering a new business name :
** If you have indicated on the form that you are registering a new business name as part of your application, the business licensing team will pass the application onto the Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC).
** The JFSC will contact you to take a £50 registration fee before your business name can be registered.
** You will either receive a certificate confirming the registration of your business name, or be contacted by the JFSC if there is a reason why your requested business name has been refused.
** You should check that your preferred business name is not already registered, and that it complies with any guidance issued by the JFSC.
Registering to trade as a limited liability company :
** For information on how to incorporate a limited company (body corporate) in Jersey, you can contact Jersey Business who can provide free, confidential business advice.
** Once your company is incorporated, you must complete the application form for a business licence and return it to the Social Security building.
