Money Order Application Forms, which are available in English, Sinhalese and Tamil, may be filled in any one of these languages.

Rules for Telegraph Money Orders :
Telegraph Money Orders are subject to the rules for ordinary Money Orders, except as specially notified in the following clauses.

Hours of Business for Telegraph Money Orders :
The hours of business for Telegraph Money Orders are generally the same as those for ordinary Money Orders. At Telegraph Offices, however, Telegraph Money Orders are issued and paid during the hours at those offices for telegraph business, but no Telegraph Money Order business is transacted between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. or on Sundays and Post Office holidays.

Charges for Telegraph Money Orders :
The charge for a Telegraph Money Order, in addition to the usual rate of commission on an ordinary Money Order shall be the cost of the telegram of advice calculated at the current rates for telegrams.
The sender of an Telegraph Money Order (which can be sent at Ordinary or Urgent telegraph rates) can also prepay the cost of a reply.

Private Communication added to Telegram of Advice :
The remitter of a Telegraph Money Order may have a short communication added to the official Telegram of Advice on payment of the additional cost.

Application for Telegraph Money Orders :

The remitter must fill in ink the required entries in the appropriate Form, sign and date it in the places provided. The remitter must state in the form whether the order is to be delivered at the address of the payee or be called for at the office of Payment. In all cases the remitter of a Telegraph Money Order must furnish remitter ‘s own full name (not merely the surname) and a sufficient and complete address of the payee to ensure correct delivery and payment. In the case of Telegraph Money Orders, if the remitter wishes that remitter’s name to be communicated to the payee on delivery, the remitter must cross the form for payment of the order through a bank, or must write remitter ‘s name as a private message to be included in the Telegram of Advice.

Address of Payee of a Telegraph Money Order :
If an order is to be delivered at the payee’s address, and that address is beyond five miles from the Telegraph Office of Destination, the remitter should prepay the express charges for delivery of telegrams, otherwise the order will be posted at the Office of Payment, and may involve delay.
A registered abbreviated address cannot be accepted in place of the name of the payee, but it may be used as an address only, if prefixed by the symbol ” c/o ” and if the name of the payee is furnished in full. Thus, a Telegraph Money Order cannot be made payable to ” Ajax, Colombo ” but it may be drawn in favour of “Ms. Rani Rambukpotha, c/o Ajax, Colombo”. A Telegraph Money Order drawn in favour of “Manager, C/o Ajax,” cannot be accepted as “Manager” is not the full name of the payee. The use of abbreviated addresses may, however, in some cases give rise to delay in payment.

Certificate of Issue for Telegraph Money Orders :
On payment of the amount of the order and the charges for commission and for the Telegram of Advice, the remitter is given a receipt, and the transmission by telegraph and delivery to the payee is carried out by the Post Office. The remitter should see that the receipt is on a printed and numbered form of Certificate of Issue of a Money Order, and that it is signed and date stamped by the officer who issues it.
