1. Best Mascot 2014 :
The monster of all America’s Best contests just grew bigger, meaner and more bizarre.

USA TODAY High School Sports’ America’s Best contest series drew nearly 80 million votes a year ago for the best mascots competition. The mascots contest is back — and this time with more wild and wacky high school nicknames. Best Mascots II launched Monday with 408 of America’s top high school nicknames and after three rounds of voting, a champion will be crowned April 25.
The state round will end April 8. The 51 state-round winners (Washington D.C. included) and the top five schools receiving the most votes without winning their state, will advance to the regional round.
Last year, the Centralia (Ill.) Orphans won the first best mascots contest with more than 25 million votes in the final round.
This year’s best mascots contest is the eighth installment in the America’s Best series, which has drawn more than 100 million votes and attracted fans from all sections of the country. More than 1,800 different schools have been involved in at least one of the contests, and no state has produced multiple winners with past champions hailing from Missouri, Vermont, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Kansas.
The America’s Best contest series launched in November 2012 with the first best high school football rivalry competition, won by Brookfield vs. Marceline in Missouri.
