1. Control Document Index Records :

The Control Document Index includes BLM documents that affect or have affected the control, limitation, or restriction of public land and resources.

To search our database for CDI documents, start by selecting the Search Documents By Type tab, and then selecting the CDI sub-tab.

CDI documents include public laws, proclamations, and withdrawals. CDI documents have been kept on microfilm since the 1950’s, but are now being scanned and linked to existing data records from BLM’s LR2000 database.

2. Providing Search Criteria :

** Start by selecting a state. The following fields will be filtered by the state you select : county, meridian, and authority.
** You do not have to fill in all of the fields.
** Fields that you leave empty are ignored. We only list records that match the fields you fill in.
** To search all states at once, select “Any State” at the bottom of the state dropdown. If you choose this option, you will not be able to select a specific county or meridian.
** The name represents a person, group, or entity associated with the document. It is not broken out into first, middle and last name parts. Enter any part or parts of the name in any order. For example, to search for John Smith, you could enter “Smith John” or “John Smith”.
** You can get a brief description of what each field means by hovering your mouse over it.

3. Using wildcards :

** Wildcards can help you find variations on spellings in the Name and the Geographic Name search fields. Wildcards let you enter incomplete spellings, using a special “wildcard” character to replace the characters you are not certain of. The percent sign (“%”) will match any number of characters in the search field. Underscore (“_”) matches any one single character.
** In the Name field, only the percent wildcard is allowed. Also, the percent can only be at the end of a name part. For instance, “JACK% SM%” is allowed (and would match Jack Smith and Smyth Jackson). “SM%TH” is not allowed because the wildcard is in the middle.

4. Search Tips :

To search for CDI documents :
** Start by selecting the State.
** You do not have to fill in all fields, but provide at least one additional field.
** Click the Search CDI button.

You can get a brief description of what each field means by hovering your mouse over it. You can get more detailed information by checking the Glossary in the Reference Center. For more tips and help, check out our CDI Search Overview.

Using the Name field :
The name represents a person, group, or entity associated with the document. It is not broken out into first, middle and last name parts. Enter any part or parts of the name in any order. For example, to search for John Smith, you could enter “Smith John” or “John Smith”.
