1. E-tax :
E-tax is the ATO’s free, fast and secure service you can use to prepare and lodge your individual tax return online.
Most refunds are issued within 12 business days.
E-tax 2013 is available until 31 May 2014. However by law you were required to lodge your tax return no later than 31 October 2013.
If you already know the requirements for using e-tax, you can download the software now and get started.
2. Downloading and installing e-tax:
Windows users – to download and install e-tax:
** Right click on the link below. On the menu that appears, select Save target as or Save link as.
** A Save as dialog box appears. Select the location on your computer where you want to save the file and click Save. The file name for the windows download is etax2013_1.msi and the file size is approximately nine megabytes.
** Go to the location on your computer where you saved the file and double-click on etax2013_1.msi.
** Follow the on-screen instructions to install the program.
** If you are vision impaired, select the ‘vision impaired’ option during the installation process.
** If your computer security settings prompt you to authorise the installation or running of e-tax, you will need to accept this to continue.
Mac users – to download and install e-tax:
** Click on the link below.
** Once the file is downloaded, double-click on etax2013_1. The file name for the Mac download is etax2013_1.dmg and the file size is approximately 32 megabytes.
** Follow the on-screen instructions to install the program.
** If your computer security preferences only allow installation of apps from the Mac App Store, you will need to configure those preferences to allow applications downloaded from Mac App Store and identified developers. E-tax 2013 is signed with a registered Apple Developer certificate.
3. Availability of e-tax :
E-tax 2013 is available from 1 July 2013 until 31 May 2014. However, by law you were required to lodge your tax return no later than 31 October 2013.
Computer requirements :
We recommend you use e-tax on a computer running a recent version of Windows or Mac operating systems.
You’ll need an internet connection to pre-fill your tax return and lodge it online.
Verifying your identity :
To lodge your e-tax return online, or use the pre-filling service, you need to verify your identity using either:
** a notice of assessment we issued to you after 1 May 2008 and before 25 May 2013
** your tax file number, issued before 25 May 2013, and a ‘shared secret’.
Downloading and installing e-tax :
E-tax is a software program that you download and install on your computer. E-tax 2013 is available from 1 July 2013 until 31 May 2014 (but you must lodge your tax return by 31 October 2013).
4. Using e-tax :
E-tax automatically performs checks and calculations to help you complete your tax return correctly, and can pre-fill some of your information.
Members of your household can each use the same copy of the e-tax software to prepare and lodge their own tax returns.
For vision impaired users, most commercial versions of screen magnification software should work with the standard installation of e-tax for windows.
If you’re in business as a sole trader or a partner in a partnership, you can use e-tax to prepare and lodge your individual tax return. However, you can’t use e-tax to lodge a company, trust or partnership return. Tax agents can’t use e-tax.
5. Lodging your e-tax return :
If you can verify your identity and have an internet connection, you can lodge your e-tax return online. If you can’t lodge online, you can use e-tax to prepare and print a paper tax return to lodge by mail.
