What is Cybercrime?

Cybercrime is an issue which impacts the lives of many Australians. Cybercrimes are crimes which are :
** directed at computers or other devices (for example, hacking), and
** where computers or other devices are integral to the offence (for example, online fraud, identity theft and the distribution of child exploitation material).

Common types of cybercrime include hacking, online scams and fraud, identity theft, attacks on computer systems and illegal or prohibited online content.

The effect of cybercrime can be extremely upsetting for victims, and not necessarily just for financial reasons. Victims may feel that their privacy has been violated, and that they are powerless. Unfortunately, as Australia’s reliance on technology grows, the cost and incidence of cybercrime is expected to increase.

How Do I Make a Report?

The following screens will guide you to make a report. Provide as much detail as possible so we can best process your report. You should keep any relevant information about the incident in case police contact you. This could include emails, screenshots or any other evidence kept.

You should not provide any personal financial details when reporting. You should not report on a device which you think might be infected by a virus. The report must be completed in one session and will automatically close after 5 hours of inactivity.

What Happens Next?

Shortly after you submit your report, you will receive a confirmation email with a unique ACORN reference number if you provide your email address. Please be aware that not all reports to the ACORN will be referred or investigated.

However, your report will be treated seriously and will help our law enforcement and government agencies to develop a clearer picture of cybercrime trends which affect Australians.

ACORN Impersonation Scam Warning

The Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN) is aware that scammers are sending emails claiming to be from an ACORN government official.

These fraudulent emails are being sent from gmail accounts. The emails are false and should be immediately deleted and reported at Official Website. Do not reply to these emails.

Police agencies investigating ACORN reports will only contact you directly via an official police.gov.au email account or telephone call and they will quote the reference number you automatically receive when lodging an ACORN report.

No legitimate requests for personal information will come from a gmail account or via social media channels. Legitimate requests will never ask that you provide them with remote access to your computer, that you make electronic funds transfers to a third party, or download software.
