Birth Certificate Online Application :

A birth certificate provides written proof of your birth and that your birth is recorded in the registry of births, deaths and marriages.

You can request a copy or (international) extract of this certificate. You request a copy or extract of the birth certificate in the municipality where you were born.

You can request a copy or extract of this certificate in different ways :
1. Online with your DigiD.
2. Written request with the Application form for birth certificate. A fully completed and signed form can be sent to the Department of Public Service together with a copy of your valid form of identification.

At a Department of Public Service counter at one of The Hague’s district offices. For this you need valid form of identification. Make an online appointment to apply for your birth certificate.

Copy or international extract :
A copy of the birth certificate comes with a stamp and a signature from the Registry Office. This is also known as a certified, official or authenticated copy.

A copy of the birth certificate is only available in Dutch. Do you need a copy of the marriage certificate in another language- Then you will need to have it have it translated yourself by a sworn translator.

An international extract of the birth certificate is available in other languages. The extract contains only the personal details which can be found in the birth certificate. The multiple-language extract comes in Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish and Serbo-Croatian. You can choose this option when you submit your application.

Conditions :
** You can only request a copy or extract of a birth certificate in The Hague if you were born in The Hague.
** Would you like to request a copy or extract of a foreign birth certificate- This is only possible if you have had it registered with the Registry Office of the Municipality of The Hague (Afdeling Landelijke Taken).
** You can request a copy or extract of a birth certificate if it concerns your own birth certificate. It is also possible to request a copy or extract for someone else. Read more about this under requesting a copy or extract for someone else.
** Was the birth certificate drawn up more than 100 years ago- Then you will need to contact The Hague Municipal Archives.

Birth certificate fees :
A birth certificate costs € 12.50 (rate for 2014). If you apply for the certificate online, you will pay this amount directly through iDeal. You can only pay by bank card at the district offices; however, you can also pay cash, as well as by bank card, at the Centrum district office (City Hall).

Postage costs are added for requests in writing. You will receive an invoice for the total amount.

How long does it take :
** With an online request, you will receive the copy or extract after 3 working days.
** With a request in writing, you will receive the certificate after 10 working days.
** At the Department of Public Service counter, you will get the copy or extract of birth certificates issued after 1986 right away. You will receive certificates from before 1986 after 5 working days. You will also receive foreign certificates registered with the Municipality of The Hague after 5 working days.
