Make an appointment :
** Make an appointment online to register the death. This way you can avoid a long wait at the city district office.
** The funeral director or a surviving relative will need to register the death in person at one of The Hague’s district offices. The registration is processed while you wait.
** When a death is reported, the municipality issues a document giving permission for the funeral to take place. To postpone or expedite a funeral or cremation, you will need to apply for permission.

What to bring to register a death :
** When registering a death, you must submit the ‘judicial declaration of death’. This is the official confirmation of death by a physician. The funeral director will arrange this on your behalf.
** Bring a valid form of identification.

Was the deceased registered in the Municipality of The Hague- The municipality will then update the person’s details in the registry of births, deaths and marriages and in the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP).

Was the deceased not registered in the Municipality of The Hague- Then the Department of Public Service will forward the information to the municipality where he/she lived.

Special circumstances :
The municipality will also draw up a death certificate in these special circumstances :
** when the individual is presumed dead (rechtsvermoeden). If someone’s body has not been recovered but the death is certain, the court can declare this person legally deceased.
** a stillborn child.

Certificate of succession :
Registration of death is not a certificate of succession (verklaring van erfrecht). Once in possession of the certificate of succession, the heirs can show that they have a right to the deceased’s possessions and debts. The certificate of succession must be issued in the form of a notarial instrument by a Dutch notary.

Death registration fees :
A copy of the death certificate : € 12.50 (rate for 2014) excluding postage costs for a request in writing. You will receive an invoice for this.

You can only pay by bank card at the district offices; however, you can also pay cash, as well as by bank card, at the Centrum district office (City Hall).
