Apply For Driving Licence After Loss/Theft :

Have you lost your driving licence? Or has it been stolen? Apply for a new driving licence or a replacement at the municipality. A replacement driving licence will be valid until the same date as your old driving licence.

** Apply for your driving licence in person at a counter of the Department of Public Service. You can make an appointment for this online.
** When applying for a new driving licence and you are not yet 60, then, in most cases, the driving licence will be valid for 10 years.
** Please note : Are aptitude requirements applicable? Then you need to be retested.
** If you are applying for a replacement driving licence, this licence will be valid until the same date as your old driving licence.
** Pick up your driving licence in person at the district office where you applied for it. You must collect it within 3 months after applying for it. After that the document will no longer be valid and the municipality is obligated to annul it. You will then have to apply and pay for it again.

What to bring when renewing or replacing your driving licence :
** A declaration of loss. You will fill in this declaration of loss when applying for a new or replacement driving licence at the district office.
** A passport photo. Strict rules apply to passport photos. For example, the photo has to be a good likeness, in colour and taken straight from the front. A list of all the requirements can be found in Passport photo requirements.
** A valid form of identification.

Conditions :
** Are you applying for a new driving licence? Then the same conditions apply as they would to Renew a driving licence.
** You may not drive without a valid driving licence. You may only resume driving a motor vehicle when you have received the replacement or new driving licence.

Citizenship requirements :
To obtain a driving licence, you need to meet 1 of the following conditions :
** You are a citizen of one of the EU or EEA member countries or of Switzerland.
** You have a valid residence permit.

Driving licence fees :
Application for a driving licence : € 38.45 (rate for 2014)
Loss fees : € 38.45 + € 34.10 supplement = € 72.55
Penalty for lost document : € 38.45 + € 37.85 supplement = € 76.30

These fees must be paid upfront when you submit your application. You can only pay by bank card at the district offices; however, you can also pay cash, as well as by bank card, at the Centrum district office (City Hall).

How long does it take :
** 5 working days.
** Do you need your driving licence urgently- Then you may use the expedited procedure, in which case you will receive your licence after a maximum of 2 working days (if the application is submitted before 14.00 hrs.). This procedure is more expensive.
** Has your driving licence been stolen or lost several times- Then you may not make use of the emergency procedure. In this case, your application will take longer than usual.
