Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) is responsible for business registration in Tanzania. BRELA issues certificates of compliance for foreign companies, certificates of incorporation for local companies and certificates of registration for single proprietorship. Firms must then register their businesses with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) or any of the other five social security schemes in Tanzania and, depending on their business activities, with the Ministry of Industry and Trade (“schedule A”) or the Municipality (“schedule B”).

Investors who wish to apply for incentives and are not yet incorporated may create a company through the one stop shop at Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) provided that their investment projects are worth at least 300,000 USD for foreigners and 100,000 USD for Tanzanian Nationals.

** TIC can facilitate foreign investors to register the branches of their foreign companies in Tanzania.
Register a business name :
Registering a business name is the simplest way to start and conduct business in Tanzania. It is also the most inexpensive and easiest business form to maintain. In Tanzania individuals (sole proprietors) or partners (partnerships) who wish to register their business as personal business other than companies are categorized under Business Names.
Renew business licence :
The Ministry of Industry and Trade announced the annual renewal of business licences starting from July 2013. Business licences are therefore no longer free. All businesses across the country are required to apply for annual business licences as the government reverts to the Business licencing Act of 1972 that limits business licences to definite periods.
All businesses with licences provided between July 2004 and June 2013 should visit relevant issuing authorities to renew licences upon paying the relevant fees. Renewal of licences should be done before 31st December 2013
