Introduction :
In today’s highly competitive international market-place, customers, governments, stakeholders the world over are demanding organizations to adopt management systems which provide an assurance of consistently safe and quality goods (product) and services.

It has therefore become necessary for manufacturers and service providers to give this assurance to enable them compete favourably on the international and domestic markets.

To make Ghanaian goods and services competitive, the Ghana Standards Authority [GSA] through the support of the government of Ghana and UNIDO has established the GSA Management Systems Certification Scheme, to provide third party Certification against the Management Systems [MS] standards such as GS ISO 9001 :2008 and GS ISO 22000:2005. The certification services are provided to all applicants without any discrimination.

Scope Of Certification :
Ghana Standards Authority performs Management Systems Certification activities, in accordance with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17021 :2011 & ISO 22003 for the following management system standards:
** GS ISO 9001 :2008 – Quality Management Systems – Requirements
** GS ISO 22000 :2005 – Food Safety Management Systems – Requirements for any Organization in the food chain.

Benefits Of GSA MSCS Scheme :

1. Internal benefits to organizations include :
** Improved customer focus and process orientation within organization.
** Improved management commitment and decision-making.
** Better working conditions and increased motivation of employees.
** Reduced cost of internal failure [low rates of re-work, rejection] and external failures[replacements, complaints, returns]
** Continual improvement of the MS.

2. External benefits to organizations include :
** Higher customer and stakeholders satisfaction
** Improved reputation and cooperate image.
** More market competitiveness
** Opens up export markets for your products and services.
** Adds credibility and confidence -confident that organization’s products or services meet relevant international and local regulation.

How To Get Certified :
Step- A :
Submitted application is reviewed for adequacy. If adequate, GSA MSCS provides you with a contract based on the size and nature of your organization. We can then proceed with the audit after signing the contract.

Step- B :
GSA-MSCS may perform a ‘pre-audit’ to give an indication of your company’s readiness for the certification. This is optional. The pre-audit assessment is usually found useful in identifying any weaknesses and building confidence in your systems before the formal audit.

Step- C :
The first part of the formal audit is the ‘Stage I. This evaluates the compliance of your documented system with the requirements of the standard (s). This is to better understand the nature of your company, effectively plan the rest of the audit and examine key elements of your system. A report will be issued identifying any concerns or observed non-compliances for immediate action.

Step- D :
This is ‘Stage II’ of the initial audit process. This audit involves interviews, examination of records, observation of working practices to determine how compliant your processes are with the standards and your own documentation system. The findings of the audit are classified as either major or minor non-conformances along with other observations and opportunities for improvement.

Step- E :
Once you have addressed the non-conformities, a technical review of the audit reports will then be conducted by an Approval Committee to confirm the issuance of a certificate.

Step- F :
Surveillance audits will be scheduled at either eight to twelve month intervals depending on the contract. During the visits, we review the implementation of the action plan addressing the past non-conformities and examine certain mandatory and other selected parts of the system in line with an audit plan that is provided you before each visit.

Step- G :
Before the third anniversary of the initial certification, our routine visit will be extended to enable a re-certification audit. Surveillance visits will then continue, as before, on a 3-year cycle.

HACCP is increasingly being made a requirement for market entry by regulators and major buyers worldwide.
