1. Births, deaths and marriages:
The Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) Registration Office is responsible for registering and maintaining an accurate record of all births, deaths, marriages, changes of name, adoptions and sexual reassignments that occur in South Australia.
There is no charge for registration of a birth.
BDM also provide legally acceptable proofs of birth, death, marriage, changes of name, adoption and sexual reassignment registered in South Australia.
The office also provides civil marriage ceremonies at the Registration Office. See organise a marriage or the Marriages section for more information.
Current Processing times: Approximately 15 – 20 working days

3. How to register :
Instead of filling in the printed Birth Registration Statement provided to you by the hospital or midwife you can now register a birth online in one easy process
If you prefer to lodge the form provided to you by the hospital or midwife you can do so by mail or in person. See the Contact us section below.
When to register :
All births in South Australia must be registered within 60 days as required by law.

4. Apply for a birth certificate :
Who can apply :
Anyone born in South Australia can apply for their own birth certificate.
Refer to the Access policy page for more information.
For all but historical access, applicants are required to produce Proof of Identity at the time of application.
How to apply :
You can apply online for a birth certificate or you can fill in an application form.

By post: Cheque – payable to Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Office, money order or credit card details
Online: Credit card
